I would put Veyil on par with Annakkili and Roja as killer debuts. This 2006 movie brought us a wonder kid who rightly took the mantle of the next ARR from Harris Jeyaraj. Being ARR's nephew, doesn't hurt the claim either. While charges of nepotism may have been warranted at the outset, GVP has certainly earned his keep as a talent to watch. In his dozen or so films, he has put out at least as many hits. His arrangements are winsome and his melodies fetching. He may have also reached the Rajini movie milestone with 'Kuselan', sooner than any MD could've dreamed. While 'pErinbap pEchchukkaaran' from Kuselan does owe a lot to today's SOTD, GVP deserves ready praise for the splash he has already made between "Veyil" and "Anandha Thandavam". Here's cheers to his steady growth like that famous relative of his.
According to Wikipedia, Veyil was the first Tamil language film screened at the prestigious French film festival, Cannes in 2007, under the 'Tous les Cinemas du Monde' section. The movie sounds like perfect art house fare. The song is easily the best written song in quite some time. The richness of the details jump out like delectable memories. The lyricist not only wraps up the situation and scene verbally, he provides an entire childhood as a novel summary in this literary treat. While song # 1000 beckons us, it is only fitting that we finish the triple digits with a song that is one for the ages.
