Waiting at the cusp of dhooL's own milestone of 1000 songs, I took measure of the past decade in my musical wanderings. Music fans amass so many songs that their musical past becomes a leap that's at least a couple of decades worth. The decades multiply if the fans are fanatics or collectors. In our fervor to excavate the old we sometimes forget the not so distant past. If you haven't heard the SOTD, give it a chance, it might surprise you with its simplicity and tenderness. If you're familiar with it, this revisit shouldn't hurt either.
"Sevvaanam" was featured in my favorite album by YSR. Such was the surprise and joy when I heard the variety and promise held in the dizzying pleasures of this soundtrack, that I took it with me everywhere. Withstanding a few customary lapses in judgment with choice of singers, "Poovellaam Kettuppaar" promised a furtive future for the then overlooked second son of a certain legend. YSR's promise even took hold for some time with youthful exuberance in the hits and ambitious missteps in the misses. Up until PopCarn, I was championing his cause and reminded anyone who would listen to me or tried to get away desperately. I truly believed in him back then. Then came the clout, the fuss, the big banners, the rogue pimp attitude of subjugating and raping classics, freeloading and random phrasing from world music. Slowly and staggeringly, another promise faded, another hope was trampled for vulgar gains. When the seemingly good chase themselves astray, the cynic in me crowds out a bit more light from my soul.
Bygones, I hear you say. I guess, bygones. Some lights flicker, some fight for a chance, some linger, and some sell themselves short. Oh well, let me not get too nostalgic and gloomy over my ten year retrospective of one sad artist. There is still Ramesh Vinayagam (oh, I hope), GVP (don't you dare cross me too), Dharan, Niru, and a few others. And a few old guns--HJ, VS, and ARR--are still blazing away, however intermittently. I'll have find solace in that.
Back to the here and now, then. Today's SOTD wasn't a popular song when it came out 10 years ago. But even today, it arrives like the promise of a sunrise yet again. YSR shows remarkable reticence in the arrangements, a phrase that is sadly never to be repeated about his newer music. Srinivas sounds like A.M.Raja reincarnated. Pazhani Barathi too deserves a special mention for this soundtrack. His career may have found him bigger hits and grander applause later, but to me he shined his brightest here in this upbeat ode to nature.
