SOTD: Songs from Saath Saath (1982)
Singers: Jagjit and Chitra Singh
Actors: Farooq Sheikh, Deepti Naval
Music: Kuldip Singh
In the days of the angry man type roles popularized by Amitabh Bachchan, Saath Saath came, I believe, as a breath of fresh air. It is the story of a young ideal college going man who tries to swim upstream against the societal corruption, but moves to the "dark side" when things get tough.
This is how the story goes to the best of my memory. I remember watching it on Doordharshan.
The story starts when Rakesh played by Farooq Sheikh is at a college in Mumbai studying to be a journalist or an economist or something like that. He is idealistic and thinks about righting the society through the power of his pen. Professor Choudhary (played by A.K. Hangal) serves as his mentor and has an agreement with Rakesh that he would create a printing press for Rakesh once he retires. Meanwhile, Gita (played by Deepti Naval) who is a girl from an upper middle class family studying in the same college is drawn to Rakesh by his idealism and falls in love with Rakesh. Rakesh also reciprocates and sings this song:
Listen to Tumko Dekha To Yeh Khayaal Aaya
Gita's father objects to her love interest and Gita walks out of the house and marries Rakesh. They settle down in a shack and life initally is blissful. Rakesh is, I believe, finishing his studies and also working part-time. They are unable to make ends meet and Gita gives up her studies and starts working as a teacher in a school. This is when the following song is picturized symbolizing their happiness despite not being well off.
Listen to Yeh Tera Ghar, Yeh Mera Ghar
Soon they are blessed with a child and Rakesh meets several obstacles in the real world beacuse of his idealism. They are unable to make ends meet. He takes up a job at a friends printing press. When his former professor reminds Rakesh about the agreement they had to start work together, Rakesh refuses and sends him on his way. At his new job, Rakesh starts behaving like the very people that he despised when he was a student. Gita slowly starts objecting to his change in character, and does not believe that the monetary gain is worth the loss of morals. Things become heated and there are several disagreements betwen the once happy couple. At a party for his new friends, the following song is picturized.
Listen to Kyon Zindagi Ke Raah Mein
Gita decides to walk out of the marriage and lets Rakesh know about her decision. Do they reconcile? Watch the movie to find out.
The videos for the songs in today's SOTD can be found on youtube.
I don't know whether I need to talk too much about the husband and wife ghazal team of Jagit and Chitra Singh. You can find details about them at
