So we come across once again one of those rare instances of an album composed by MSV for a movie that was not released. We had earlier in SOTD featured such stray occurrences- SPB waxing eloquent in ‘mangai oru thingaL’ (mun oru kaalathilE) and Janaki spelling magic in ‘poo magaL mEni’ (gnaayiRum thingaLum). Now let us listen to the singers singing together for the Mellisai Mannar, this once again for a movie that does not seem to have been released.
Along with his sidekick, Gowndamani was riding an unprecedented high in the early 80s. And as the decade progressed, he seemed unstoppable and was a considered a mandatory mascot who was a sure draw at the box office. So much so, that in 1985, C. Dhandayudhapani of Devar Films thought it fit to cast Gowndamani as the lead protagonist in his ‘paNam paththum seiyyum’ and the movie celebrated a 100 day run. Inspired with this triumph, Dhandayudhapani came out with ‘piRandhEn vaLarndhEn’, again with Gowndamani in the lead in the following year. However, this movie failed to repeat the success act of ‘paNam paththum seiyyum’. In between these 2 movies, Gowndamani seems to have been roped in to play the lead in a movie titled ‘naalum therindhavan’ (Anita Janani Arts) directed by K. Nataraj. Gowndamani and the late Viji appear on the record sleeve. The record gives its year of manufacture as 1986.
Incidentally, there was a movie released earlier in 1968 with the same name. ‘naalum thenrindhavan’ (Sri Balaji Films) had Ravichandran and Kanchana in the lead, and music by S.M. Subbiah Naidu.
MSV composed 4 songs for this ‘naalum therindhavan’ of the 80s. ‘machchaan puLLi vechcha maana paththi’ by S.P. Shailaja & chorus is a dashing, fun-filled number with Malaysia Vasudevan making a midway entry with ‘kaayaatha kaanagathE’. ‘naalum therindhavan, indha naatta purinjavan’ has Malaysia Vasudevan spewing some profound home truths with characteristic flippancy. For ‘sandhumunai sindhugaLai padippOm’ SPB teams up with the then new entrant Chithra and a host of chorus voices to render the Master’s delightful tune that stores surprises at every turn.
We are left with the SOTD ‘maNiyOsai enna solludhO’. With a tantalizing tune reminiscent in parts of his own ‘azhagiya thirumuga dharisanam’ which he would adapt again for ‘sariyena yEzhu swarangaLum’ later, MSV sculpts to perfection a tour de force composition and embraces techniques such as superimposition of voices that add so much appeal to the song. A mesmerizing melody bolstered by imaginative orchestration punctuated by the clangour of the temple bells, the Mellisai Mannar’s famed flourishes appear all through the song. Metha’s poetic lines are brought to pulsating life by the reigning singers of the time. With the acknowledged chemistry between them working overtime here, SPB and Janaki seemed to have enjoyed thoroughly this outing- listen to the bits of humming placed at strategic points by the Mellisai Mannar. What a pity a marvel such as this went wholly unnoticed!
