When at CECRI in mid 90s, I passed by the TV room and caught this song's pallavi at the end - "kadhal niila theyndhadhO" in the silken sad voice of SPB and I guess it was Mohan on the screen. No other details were available. I had hunted for this song all these years and finally got hold of it after say 10+ years. It is a soulful solo rendered beautifully by SPB. I came to know that this is from the movie aayiram pookkaL malarattum. The percussive pattern is very unusual and in some places I can see the chords not punched exactly on beat - probably delberately. This song somehow sounds to me like the SPB counterpart of "vaazve maayam" by KJY. Songs like these are purely dependent on the singer and unless he or she does a good job they go straight to the bin.
