Today's SOTD is from the Bimal Roy classic Do Bhiga Zameen. Widely regarded as one of the realistic classics, DBZ is the story of courage of a poor farmer who struggles against all odds to create a future for his family. As the title suggests, the story deals with a plot of farmland that has been pawned away. The landlord wants the money back for the land and the poor farmer Shambu, played amazingly by Balraj Sahni, goes to Calcutta to try and find the money to get back his land. The journey of finding the money is not that simple and Shambu faces innumerable challenges, including driving a hand rickshaw to make money. The struggles he goes through are heart-wrenching. See the movie to find out whether he succeeds in the task. An excellent movie. Today's SOTD is sung in the fields of Shambu's village when he is about to leave for Calcutta. I have added a piece of dialog in this clip to setup the song.
Salil Choudhury's music, as usual, is fantastic. There is not a song that he has composed, till now, that I haven't enjoyed. Truly a great music composer. Apparently, he has another feather in his hat for this movie as the original story for the movie is also by Salil Choudhury.
The lines in this song "Apni Kahani Chod Ja Muft Nishani Chod Jaa" reminded me of the dialog in Thevar Magan between the Thevar and his son, when the son wants to leave the village.
