I remember Manivannan saying in an interview that "Jothi" was his directorial debut, even though "ILamaik KAlangaL" was released before Jothi. Fortunately for him, the media and public remembered IK and its success which set him up for a long career. The movie which starred Mohan and Ambika didn't have much else memorable besides the SOTD.

The tabla, flute, violin, and shenoy representing the old-world rural sound are classic pre-mottai Raja. Of course, the 80sish synth tremors do show up like forebears of a dreadful future, but they're thankfully minimal and overshadowed by the earthy lyrics, rustic vocals, and genuine energy.
