This has to be one of Yesudas' earliest Thamizh songs. Though the pairing of the singers makes it hard to suspend our disbelief that KJY's voice is supposed to be the uncle and SJ's the niece, the elderly pride and filial affection comes through in the song. The song sounds classical and unorthodox at the same time. The sandham has an improvisational feel to it which is a nice reprieve from the overly contrived and premeditated assault happening in today's music. The way the sandham picks up speed like a wave growing big right before it folds on us at "iLam vayadhu..." and "pudhu manaiyil..." gets me every time.

The orchestration is not sophisticated, the hyper tempo tabla, violin, and flute remind me of the filler music they used to play between scene changes in Chennai stage dramas. Nevertheless, sometimes just capturing the right spirit in a song can be enough and this song does it just fine. I haven't heard any other song by the composer, MGR (couldn't resist the initials, sorry); those in the know enlighten us please.
