Today we feature an all time classic from Lata. Aayega Aanewala from the movie Mahal. A friend of mine from high school talked about this movie very highly and particularly about this song. When I first heard this song, I was completely awestruck by the sheer beauty of Lata's voice and the music. I finally rented the movie and I must confess, I was really impressed by the story for a movie made in 1949.

I don't know, maybe Saravanan can confirm this, but I think this was among the first Hindi movies that featured a lady in a white saree singing a haunting melody. The suspense is maintained till the end and the ending is not really the normal Indian filmy ending at all.

The story is as follows:
Ashok Kumar moves into an old mansion (hence the name Mahal) and is surprised to see a portrait of him hanging in the Mahal. While he is still trying to comprehend this, he hears today's SOTD. He rushes outside to see a beautiful girl singing the song and tries to follow her. He comes to know that the voice belongs to his mistress from a previous life and that he should die if they are to be united. Does this happen? Watch the movie to find out. In the meanwhile, enjoy today's SOTD.
