Song: pavaLak kodiyilE muththukkaL
Film: PaNam Padaiththavan
Singers: TMS, LRE
Music: Viswanathan-Ramamurthy
Lyricist: Vaali
Though this is not a very obscure song, I picked it for some choice anecdotes about this song that others may not be privy to. When a friend of mine was discussing MGR songs with TMS, the singer apparently said that MGR used to keenly follow the hit songs from others' movies as well, especially Sivaji's, and would even be a little upset if Sivaji songs overshadowed his. Now that's the kind of healthy competition where we benefit the most. After "kallellAm mANikka kallAgumA" became a huge hit, MGR felt that he should've got such a song in his movie. So he commissioned V-R to create a song where LRE's humming interweaves TMS' singing just like the song being emulated. And that's how the SOTD came into existence.
Besides the blockbuster pairing of V-R, TMS, and LRE, Vaali's lyrics for this song are worth an ovation. It has been my opinion for some time that this is the best love song written by Vaali.
In his budding years, during a TV interview, Vairamuththu was asked why he considered his songs as poems. He brusquely replied that he planned to release his song collection under the poetry genre. He went on to add, "Paalum Pazhamum kaigaLil yEndhi, enRu ezhudhinAnE Kannadhaasan, adhu kavidhai illaiyaa? PavaLak kodiyilE muththukkaL pUththAl, enRu ezhudhinAnE Vaali, adhu kavithai illaiyA?". My reaction then was that he was right in calling those two examples as poetry. But his own collection. . .well, suffice it to say, "naanthaan ungoppandaa nallamuththudhevandaa" wouldn't make any book of poetry that I would buy.
