The sustained bubble of a tabla, a morose diva singing her woes, the languid strings and flute all stirring the melancholic feel, you might imagine a Hindi movie classic from the 50s where some doe-eyed starlet with long flowing hair pines away in renaissance painting poses at an empty mansion with its curtains billowing up from studio fans...well, not quite. The era is right but with G.Ramanathan composing the music, I'm betting this is a Thamizh original until proven otherwise (of which there is plenty of precedence!). GR shows such a delicate touch that the song works like a salve for Mirchi and Sooriyan assaulted ears. And now we're off to one of Dame Jikki's best offerings. Jikki doesn't just sing the ballad, she dissolves in it and drenches us.
