When I hosted song # 882 kOttai madhil mElE (http://www.dhool.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6281), I was struck by the similarity of that song's pallavi to the unforgettable humming in todays' SOTD. Since I hosted that song, I have been revisiting this song regularly and without fail the song lifts me up every time.
Whether it's MSV's mindboggling tune (the zigzags in the sandham are mesmerizing), SPB's ode to Kishore in his yodeling, or the contrasting sangathis lavished by both PS and SPB, there is enough to keep one busy on a different aspect of the song in every listen.
Even before the first word is sung the song achieves a million more than most songs. Listen to the variations in the prelude humming, the way PS descends with her lala lala lala laa where SPB's inimitable yodel spin shows up as a cleft and shoots it up like a fountain. That alone is priceless. We get a few variations on this prelude itself, and then we get to the song. If someone could graph the peaks and valleys this sandham hits and compares it to any song today, that would be a telling sign in how sandhams have been flatlined over the years. How many composers can come up with the startling variation when "veLLi vaNNa..." hijacks the sandham to an unforeseen height with a school boy's hop and giggle? Yet, it doesn't sound discordant, only pleasantly surprising. Well, I'll let you dive in and indulge.
