Margazhi thingaL madhi niraindha nannAlAm…..

Come mid-December, the month of Margazhi sets in. Temples reverberate with early morning recitations of Thiruppavai and every day of this month is totally special. Very special to me because I wake up to the chanting of the hyms rendered by the great musician M L Vasanthakumari. I can say that MLV’s rendition of Thiruppavai is by far the best without hesitation . Thoughts about MLV took me to the wonderful film songs that she sang and this SOTD is a rare gem.

A not–so-complex dance number MLV sings so nonchalantly to justify her choice by her favourite MD C. R. Subburaman. The initials M L V could be an acronym for Melody, Laya and Vidwat. She was great in all these aspects of carnatic music. Further, endowed with a beautiful voice, she could appeal to all sections of listeners. A fast-paced singer with a briga-laden voice, see the amazing briga when she sings.. madhana gopalannnnnnn…in the pallavi when she repeats madhanagopalan. And again in the charanam ‘kanavinilEy ennai ninaindhAnEy, ninaivinilEEEEEy vandhu pugundhaanEy ‘. The glides she brings in her voice are very delightful. MLV developed a unique style even in singing film songs that we crave for her songs to this day. She is a vidhushi of outstanding merit. MLV sang her first song under CRS in Rajamukthi (1948) with MKT Bhagavathar and the songs ‘Enna Anandham’ and ‘Ingum angum engum inbhamey ‘ set in classical ragas became immortal. The advent of M LV in tfm scene as a playback singer was IMO,a real value addition that her stature lent more respectability to tamil film music in particular and film music in general. She was a constant in all NSK-CRS collaborations.

C.R Subburaman has crafted a Charukesi in the SOTD that is very unusual. This Charukesi has impressed me much more than that in GR’s Manmadha Leelaiyai or in Aadal kaneero. Without delving much into the grammar aspects, why I like this type of Charukesi means that we are used to listening to this type in that MSV’s evergreen Moondru thamizh thOndriyadhum (Pillaiyo pillai) … whenever MLV sings gopaalannnnn, I am reminded of the lines…udhithadhu paar senkadhirdhan keezhdisaiyilllll and in the charanam beginning with karpagathu cholaiyiley …in the ragamalika song Thendralilaadum koondhalil …(Maduraiyai meetta Sundarapandian) and also in some phrases in IR’s Thoodu selvadhAradi (Singaravelan).

The swift violin passages in the prelude interspersed with flute and clarionet bits go well with a dance number. A gentle veenai in the interlude is very soothing.

The lyricist of the SOTD is K.P. Kamatchisundaram. He has written this song in the Oothukaadu’s Thaaaye Yasoda mode - beautiful and apt words for a dance song. KPK was the aasthaana lyricist of AVM banner in the 40s and I heard MD R Sudharsanam who did AVM’s films in the 40s and 50s had terrific regards for KPK. We all still savour the melody and the lyrics of ThEn unnam vandu (Amaradeepam/AMR,PS) , the latter by KPK.

KPK has acted in some early films also and the temple priest role he did in Parasakthi (1952) is a memorable one.

Other memorable songs of this film are Kalai mudhalaaga thozhil muraiyaaga and Vignanathai valakkapporEndi.

N S Krishnan is the producer of Nalla thambhi(1949). Story was by C.N Annadurai. With socio-reformist views NSK launched this film as a vehicle to propagate his political and rationalistic views. The film had impressive cast - besides NSK, T A Mathuram, P Bhanumathy, S V Sahasranamam, C S Pandian, Kaka Radhakrishnan and M N Rajam. Nevertheless, the film was a flop and CNA and NSK never worked again together for a film but NSK-CRS combination did wonders in all the films they worked. For NSK, it was ‘Singam’ Subburaman always. Such was the regard!
