Song: aanandhamE alai paayudhE
Film: madhu malar
Singer: SPB
MD: Gangai Amaran
Lyrics: GA?
This was a Pratap-Suhasini starrer directed by Barathi-Vasu who split up to gain fame and infamy on their own much later. (Was Barathi, Santhaana Barathi? Vasu was P.Vasu) In his thEnkinnam program, GA mentioned that the directors wanted a song similar to "ellOrum nalam vaazha" and GA obliged in his own way, hence the piano and the horns.
The sequence was a typical birthday occasion in Indian movies where the entire cast pours in so that the object of the song walks around doing her meet and greet while the singer plays the piano and (usually a loser pining away at the lead with unrequited love) emotes openly in a song about feelings that somehow remain veiled for the other characters in the movie.
The song is lean cuisine and easily digestable. The lyrics are serviceable. But the song as a whole is agreeable for all the little delights it packs. The piano, strings, bass, and bongos glide the song along with a touch of flute here and there. The horns come in for two interludes, and for the last interlude, accordion and drums pitch in. GA sure had a delicate touch and balance with his compositions and the way the words and music flowed hand in hand. SPB sounds a bit tired but still holds fort with ease. This harkens back to when music could rightly be called "lite music". I hope it gives you some pleasure.
