And now for something completely different. I recently plunged deep into the murky waters of contemporary Thamizh soundtracks—about a year’s worth. While the path was treacherous and I suffered more than my rightful share of drek, I did unearth some winners. The most unexpected find was Dharan in the soundtrack for Sivi. While Dharan has been commissioned by the producers no doubt to woo the same audience that laps up all the techno garbage that Yuvan, Srikanth Deva, Imman, and Dheena dishout by the dozens every month, I sense behind his dance-hall beats, an aching romantic who deserves celebration.

The SOTD is easily the dance song of the year in my book. It has the tireless hook of a 70s R&B classic where the rhythms punch out the heartbeats that keep the feet moving whereas the lyrics, mood, and ambience pour on the melody to drench and drown you until you helplessly give in to its whim. I hadn’t experienced this kind of intoxicating delirium since ARR’s “thiruvellikkeni rani” or YSR’s “manjak kaattu maina”. But this one is more claustrophobic and haunting. It conjures up a smoky club meant for lovers, a place where the line between love and loss runs thin and nebulous.

Dharan, Dharan, dear boy, please don’t join the other pretenders and their slick merchandising in the name of music. You got something untouchable, you have a vision. And talent, well you got that in spades of course. From the simple yet maddeningly effective heart monitor like beep that starts the song, to the clever Thamizh prelude (a pretender would’ve shoved an unimaginative English rap excerpt here) to the perfect placement of the male and femal voices, the apt arrangement of chorus rising and falling like a fountain of love…everything works like a charm. All the singers are good here and the way they’re used is even better. The lyrics are just airy enough to dance and hearty enough to anchor the emotions. Everything hangs in such a graceful balance that this is a tiny miracle. I just wish you get the recognition that you deserve and that you’ll remain true to your talent.

Join in the fun in celebrating the SOTD or shake your head and call me crazy, but I would’ve heard this song another hundred times before this airs as an SOTD.
