Song: kOththamalli poovE
Film: kallukkuL eeram
Singers: S.Janaki, Malayasia Vasudeven, and chorus
MD: Ilayaraja
Lyrics: Gangai Amaran?
The movie itself was visionary and unique when it came out, despite having Bharathiraja in a major role. The way the filming of a movie corrupts the innocence of a small village was beautifully captured in this offbeat film. I preferred the tragic ending to the happier one that was shown in most centers. Cinematographer Nivas was credited with directing the film and Bharathiraja was credited with 'direction mERpaarvai'. That's like placing a dummy as an acting chief minister for a period in Indian politics.
I had completely forgotten about this song until I happened on it on the net. It has the exuberance of early IR compositions. The way the mirudhangam intercedes folk drums with a stalling beat is irresistible. The singers provide the perfect flavor as the folk chorus, the extended male and female humming breaking the sandham's monotony are all welcome and bygone treasures. I completely indulged myself hitting play repeatedly until the song totally came home to me. I hope you at least give it a try.
