Song: chinnanchiRu peN pOlE
Singer: Sirgazhi Govindarajan
MD: T.R. Papa, w/kunnakkudi Vaidhyanathan on violin
Lyrics: ulunthoorpettai Shanmugam
Though I'm not much for devotionals, Sirgazhi has often taken me to celestial heights with his voice. Of the many hundred devotionals he has sung, this is my favorite. Maybe it's the hard to resist Sindhu Bairavi raagam, maybe it's the simple elegance of the melody (I have wished this tune as a romantic song in SPB's voice!), or the fetching lyrics by ulunthoorpettai Shanmugam, a giant lyricist in devotionals and a permanent Sirgazhi collaborator. Whatever captivates me about this song, its allure has never faded in all these years.
I had not known that kunnakkudi played a hand in this, maybe this rendition is a special stage event, for I remember seeing T.R. Papa as the MD in the album sleeve. Regardless of the source, the magic only needs to be experienced. This particular version (as devotionals have many live versions) of the song is more sensational and moving than the already epic standard one. Across lines of faith and language, music this pure makes believers of us all.
