Song of the Day: mallari from sringaram.
Listen
- The national awards for 2005 have been announced, at last. The awards for the musical categories go to:
Best Music Direction - Lalgudi Jayaraman for ‘Sringaram’Best Lyrics - Barguru Ramachandrappa for songs in Kannada film ‘Thaayi’.
Best Male playback singer - Naresh Iyer(‘Roo Ba Roo’ in ‘Rang De Basanti’)
Best Female playback singer - Shreya Ghosal( ‘Apne Aansoo Peene Ke Liye’ in ‘Paheli’)
- When I went to India in 2005, I bought the Sringaram CD. Listened to it a couple of times then.
There are fourteen pieces in the album, several of them lasting for less than a minute. There are two numbers that hold my attention: One, "yEn indha maayamO" in hameer kalyani rendered by Bombay Jayashree (another version sung by Sowmya) and the SOTD.
The SOTD is a mix of nadhaswaram by Injikkudi brothers and sloka chants.
There are a couple of folk numbers sung by T.L.Maharajan and O.S.Arun that I thought showed that Lalgudi is adept in scoring only classical pieces.
National awards have always leaned towards classical albums and it is probably unfair that Rang De Basanti lost out to this album.
- The film also won awards for Choreography (Saroj Khan - not an obvious name when it comes to a bharatnatyam based film) and Cinematography (Madhu Ambat, his second after G.V.Iyer's Adi Sankarar).
