Song: kOttai madhil mElE
Film: thirudan
Singers: TMS, LRE
MD: MSV
Lyrics: ?
Hearing the TMS/LRE pairing with the dance-happy bongos and 60s lounge music, I was convinced that this song was from a Veda--Jai--Modern theatres combination movie. I was stunned to find the movie had the grim weepers---Sivaji/KRV in the lead with MSV as the MD. It shares the energy of a "kEttaverellaam paadalaam". But I find TMS more enjoyable here. Also, did the pallavi of this song inspire the famous "la la lalallalaa laa la la lalallalaa" humming in "endhan dEvanin paadal enna"?
With MSV, odds are great this is an entirely original composition. How I wish I was a fly on the wall when this song was being recorded! How did MSV conceive this with the musicians. Being one of Balaji's movies (i.e. hindi adaptation), I wonder what the Hindi counterpart for this song sounds like. Someone in the know please enlighten me. I would be surprised if it bore any resemblance to this song. But I doubt it can better this.
LRE made a living on such songs, she's great as usual in this, but TMS is the real revelation in this kind of mood. The way he furtively curves out the line ender, "koNdaattam" with a half-silent 'm' conveys far more than a lascivious wink ever can. Take this full throttle hopper for a spin.
