While I was browsing the dhooL archives, I realized that the much maligned melody marauder, SAR has only one song to his credit in dhooL. (Do I hear the retort, "That's one too many!"). I have gone on record risking friendships to claim that I have a dozen or so good songs of SAR that I listen to. People would hear none of it. I like the way he doesn't kill Thamizh and doesn't drown out the lyrics in most of his songs is my argument. But a song like the SOTD needs no defense. It stands proudly on its own as a delightful song no matter the maker.
The movie itself was a hodge-podge of "One flew over the cuckoo's nest" given the love treatment. But I was told it was a remake of a Malayalam movie! That's like copying two students to pass the test isn't it? I remember Prabhu milking his coyness to the extreme judging correctly that it suits the mentally challenged character perfectly. I was stuck on an interstate bus between long breaks when this movie was unleashed on us amidst sun-riped banana odors and snoring passengers. The inmates were certainly running the asylum. The things that the mind remembers. But then a song like this comes on and the mind remembers it for all the right reasons.
