MSV in the 80s- Part XIII
~ thaambathiyam oru sangeetham ~
‘thaambathiyam oru sangeetham’ (1982/ R.R. Films) starred Mohan, Sulakshana, Prasanna (debut), Subhadra, S.V. Shekar, ‘Silk’ Smitha, ‘Poornam’ Viswanathan and M.R. Rajamani. Venkat scripted and directed the movie, which was adapted from a stage play by his ‘Priyadarshini’ troupe. Editing was by T. Thirunavukkarasu and cinematography was by P.N. Sundaram. The movie was produced by Raghu.
It was a fairly engrossing story of two pairs of newly-weds who are neighbours. Stella (Sulakshana), the daughter of a shipping baron falls in love with her driving instructor Ramesh (Mohan), and marries him against the wishes of her father. And, though humble, their house is filled with happiness. Shekar (Prasanna) and Kavitha (Subhadra) stay next door, but their story is far from happy… With interesting twists, they learn that marital life is blissful music; only with understanding and love does one learn to strike the right chords…
M.S. Viswanthan crafted some delightful songs for the movie. In fact, director Venkat seemed to be a great fan of the mellisai mannar, for in a scene in the movie when Stella is learning to drive, Ramesh informs her that the car’s previous owner was none other than MSV!
The songs were:
kaadhaliyE en kaNmaNiyE – Malaysia Vasudevan & Vani Jairam (Pulamaipiththan)
indha vanji magaL- SPB (Vaali)
nyaan ninnE sammadhichu- S. Janaki (Pulamaipiththan)
naan thaayumaanavan- Jayachandran (Pulamaipiththan)
thaambathiyam oru sangeetham- MSV (Vaali)

‘naan thaayumaanavan thandhaiyaananvan’ a caressing song of solicitous reassurance is easily the pick of the album, and was earlier featured as SOTD here:

For today’s SOTD, I have picked another song from the album, and though this one was overshadowed by ‘naan thaayumaanavan’ and could secure only negligible airtime in comparison even at the time of the movie’s release, it is still cherished by aficionados like us…
indha vanji magaL by SPB

The song is a sheer pleasure to listen to even if it were just for Vaali’s intelligent word play.

The veteran lyricist has strayed off the beaten track to come out with imaginative lines that tantalize in their endings. And MSV deserves a salute for filling the preludes and interludes with vibrant music, albeit the inevitable synthesizer showing its presence, and more importantly for reining in his instrumentalists just where the lyrics need to be accentuated. And who but SPB to bring youthful exuberance to the romantic lyrics and endearing emphasis to the key words at the end of each line… I can never tire of his humming in the third interlude, just when one expected the guitar to perform a repeat act of the first interlude…
