Song of the Day: indru pOi nALai vArAi from sampoorna ramayanam.

"indRu pOi nALai vArAi" from "sampoorna ramayanam".
Singer: C.S.Jeyaraman
MD: K.V.Mahadevan
Lyrics: Maruthakaasi?
Ravanan is a marvelous, multifaceted antagonist who renders himself easily to many interpretations. Looking back at the movie, the credence and dignity that the movie had given Ravanan was astounding considering that he took on the deity of purity. (If Kollywood makes that movie today, Ravanan will be evil personified; he would court the 7 deadly sins and then some, ensuring their recipe of an irredeemable villain is intact.)
KVM's music was reliably sound as expected in such epics. While the whole soundtrack was stellar ( the marvelous raagamaaligaa comes to mind), the SOTD is brilliantly conceived and powerfully subtle in the way it coils the emotions of a proud warrior's fall from grace. The unthinkable atrocity that an adversary would belittle him so is played out here musically with the mournful tabla and the somber veenai. The whole composition has the flavor of a Hindusthani ballad.
I've always been a CSJ fan for his individuality and his dialed-down realistic approach to singing. But here he evinces nuances that are compellingly apt for the mood. He shows a dexterity that is not often associated with his remarkable facility as a singer.
