Song: kaalaip pani sindhuginRa
Film: kEttavarellAm pAdalAm
Singers: Swarnalatha, Srinivas
MD: R.D.Burman
Lyrics: Pazhani Barathi
Last year when a bunch of us from dhooL met SPB after his concert, during the long discussions about music, R.D.Burman figured prominantly in SPB's anecdotes. Apparently they had a deep bond. I'll share one of those here...
During SPB's peak in the 80s he had to travel to Mumbai to do some quick recordings for Laxmikanth-Pyarelal. As those were the days when RDB was not as busy, SPB felt it to be insensitive to call on RDB when he was in town to do songs for LP. So the singer planned to go straight to his hotel room after recording and just leave Mumbai the following morning without much fanfare. He kept his hotel plans to himself. At night around 10pm there was a knock at SPB's door. A perplexed SPB opened the door only to see RDB standing there. As an embarrassed SPB asked RDB in. RDB says something to the effect of, "%$^#*%* you come to Mumbai to record for LP and you don't even bother to look me up? You think you can leave without seeing me?" Then he hands SPB his favorite bottle of whiskey. Then it was just two friends discussing what they loved more than anything, music. They stayed up most of the night singing and reminiscing...SPB got emotional recalling RDB. He told us, "There will never be another RDB."
Recently at a music shop I came across this CD, "kEttavarellAm pAdalAm". It had Madhavan and some women on the cover. It also had RDB listed as the MD. I guessed it had to have Thamizh renditions of RDB's Hindi hits. Sure enough it did. But I was sad to find not one song in there by SPB. I know SPB sang some songs in the still born atrocity called "ulagam pirandhadhu enakkaaga". Actually, I liked "maangaattu mayilE nil nil nil" and tried unsuccessfully to air it as a themmAngu entry. Regardless, to have SPB recreate one of RDB's classics in Thamizh would've been a fitting homage for the musician and the bond that the singer had with him.
Though he's no SPB, Srinivas does a decent job with Swarnalatha in the SOTD which takes after the immortal "tere bina zindagi". Please don't compare the song or the singers with the original, there's no comparison and no upside in that. But see it as a song in its own right, as a small RDB keepsake in Thamizh and in our SOTD archive. Despite a stage troupe rendition of this classic tune, the melody manages to transcend all shortcomings and lives on while exposing the melody drought in contemporary Indian film music, especially in Thamizh.
