Song of the Day: kaaRRin mozhi from mozhi.

Listen to the song

- Sung by Balram. Lyrics by Vairamuthu. Music by Vidyasagar.

- I saw this movie last weekend and liked it. It has received fairly good reviews in general and is apparently doing good business as well. The film is produced by Prakashraj's Duet Movies. It stars Jyothika as a deaf and dumb person, Prithviraj and Swarnamalya. The film is directed by RadhaMohan.

The film is about Prithviraj falling in love with Jyothika, the added complexity is that Prithviraj is a keyboard artist and composer. The film poses the question about how Jyothika's character would sense and appreciate music (Think of the scenes between Richard Dreyfuss and his deaf son in "Mr.Holland's Opus"). There are some nice passages in the movie when this question is posed. The film thankfully doesn't immerse itself in other issues, has no villain as such and doesn't complicate the plot further. Rather, Radhamohan moves the film along with extended comedy scenes featuring side characters such as a Professor who is still living in 1984, a middle-aged apartment's secretary who sees Prakashraj in the buff, and a girl who falls in love with Prakashraj. After a while, the comedy scenes get a bit tiresome, but that is what happens when you have to build a 2 1/2 hr movie with a minimal plot. There is even a "sOga paattu" when the heroine rejects the hero's love!

Jyothika has played the role well, doesn't overplay the role and doesn't go for the sympathy vote. I think there is some major confusion in the screenplay about whether she can lip-read or not. She does in a few scenes, but doesn't in others. It also looks like the film was in the making for quite some time, as Swarnamalya looks really plump in a few scenes and suddenly thin in others.

Vidyasagar's music is the backbone of the film. The SOTD is very good, check out Vairamuthu's lyrics in this. I was a bit disappointed that Vidyasagar chose to recycle his malayalam songs for this film. I am not sure if kaatrin mozhi is recycled, but "kaNNaal pEsum peNNE" (SPB) has definitely been featured in a mallu movie before. The SOTD has a female version as well, sung by Sujatha.

Though mozhi has a deaf heroine, it doesn't go as far as "Children Of a Lesser God" (for which Marlee Matlin won an Oscar). I guess given the current tamil films (Sun TV's top 10 doesn't have kaatrin mozhi as number 1, Pokkiri is still the top) mozhi is definitely one of the better ones. Prakashraj, in his series in Ananda Vikatan, has railed enough about the monetary risk in making a "good" movie, so I will be happy if this film does well and he actually sees a profit.
