Song of the Day: naan oru ponnOviyam from kaNNil theriyum kadhaigaL.
- Venkat writes:
It happened twice in the TFM world; Five music directors scoring a song each in the same movie. In 2002, Vasanth directed the miserably titled "Hey, nee romba azhaga irukkE". The five MDs were; Srinivas, Raghav-Raja, Murugavel, Ramesh Vinayakam and Arvind-Shankar (Wait a sec! It is five or seven!). For someone who directed movies with excellent scores like kEladi kaNmani, Rhythm Vasanth indeed touch his nadir.
Prior to this, in 1980 actor A.L. Raghavan produced magnificiently titiled 'kaNNil theriyum kathikaL' which had five MDs - each scoring a song. They were; GK Venkatesh, TR Pappa, KV Mahadevan, Shankar-Ganesh and Illayaraja. KTK was a Sharathbabu, Sripriya, Vadivukkarasi starrer. While the songs scored by the elders, with two initials each Smile, faded into oblivion, two others stood (stand) out. SG produced the mellifluous 'naan unnai nenecchEn', sung by SPB, Jikki and Vani Jayaram. Great song!
But, the ultimate winner was Illayaraja's 'naan oru ponnoviam kaNdEn' - sung by SPB, P.Susheela and S Janaki. Coming to think of it, these three have dominated the south indian film music for about 150 years collectively!
The song was composed to classical dance sequence. Raja has scored tonnes of amazing songs in mOhana raagam, starting from BadhrakaLi's kannan oru kaikkuzhanthai. Perhaps Agni Natchththiram's ninnukOri is the most unique of them all. I am still amazed at this.
SOTD is another great song in mOhanam. Starting from the prelude the composition and orchesterizaiton is superb. SPB does a great job. PS and SJ sing in unison to great perfection. Raja simply goes berserk with Violins, Veena, Mridhangam. None could handle chorus as perfectly as him.
The song was written by pulamaippiththan. He has written some great songs for MGR movies (and was later a Court Poet when MGR came to power). When MGR's protege RM Veerappan produced Thangamahan (under Satya Movies) pulamaippiththan was right there, wth 'raaththiriyil pUththirukkum'. After a long gap Illayaraja recalled him for Bharathi and PP responded with 'ethilum ingu iruppaan avan yarO'.
I do not know how this song was picturized. Can't imagine Sharathbabu dancing. He might have been there in a corner, clad in a jibba, lip syncing SPB. Nor can I imagine vadivukkarasi dancing. Sripriya - could have done a decent job. Does anyone recall?
As far the movie - it was soon consigned to /dev/null. AL Raghavan threw his towel. So what? Producing a movie with five MDs and with two great songs in rarest combinations (SPB-Jikki_Vani Jayaram and SPB-PS-SJ) ALR ensured his name in TFM for eternity.
- The other songs in the film: KVM (Vettaikkaaran malaiyilae- TMS), TR Papa (Onnu rendu moonu- BSS/SPS), GKV (Naan paartha rathidevi - ALR).
- Suyamvaram, which was shot in "24 hours" (and definitely looked like it) also had multiple MDs.
