Song: erimalai eppadi porukkum
Film: Sivappu Malli
Singers: TMS, T.L.Maharajan
MD: Shankar-Ganesh
Lyrics: Vairamuthu
May thinam uzhaippavar seedhanam goes the chorus chant in the SOTD. This was back when S.A.Chandrasekar embarked on his red-themed movies, Sivappu Malli may have been the first in that series. Vijayakanth had begun his steady ascend to marketability. Sivappu Malli was a sleeper hit that season, bringing in great hauls in the B and C centers of TN.
Shankar-Ganesh had found an unexpected rebirth in their alliance with young whipper snapper Vairamuthu around this time. For the SOTD, S-G commissioned TMS and TLM, who gamely articulate the revolutionary spirit pulsating beneath the words.
The SOTD becomes a laborers' protest anthem in the movie. This situation is pregnant with possibilities for even a mellow poet. In the hands of a left-leaning firebrand youth, the song becomes a blistering battle cry. The original lyrics had "raththach chaattai adiththaal, thunbach chiRaiyin kadhavu theRikkum". But censors didn't want to take it quite that far, so a somewhat toned down, "singakkoottam nimirndhaal" was the rephrase.
Righteous fury flowing through a pen can do wonders. Revolutions have begun this way, fortunes have turned this way, and of course hatred has been spread this way too. Fire only knows to spread and engulf it knows no right or wrong. In the wrong hands it can wreak havoc. In the right hands, it can singe the minds and bring about an awakening. Happy May day everybody. Remember your rights today.
