- dhooL team writes:

The soul of music slumbers in the shell
till waked and kindled by the master’s spell;
And feeling hearts, touch them but rightly, pour
a thousand melodies unheard before!

- Samuel Rogers (Human Life)

Upon reaching this milestone, we take immense pleasure in looking back… at the appearance of SOTD with ‘sakhiyE’ from andhimantharai on June 11, 2002, and the remarkable voyage of discovery that it has been to all of us ever since. Ranging from Vasanthakokilam to Chinnaponnu, we have had an astounding array of singers gracing our portals. Songs spanning over 6 decades have made it to the SOTD, covering every conceivable genre- themmaangu, therukkoothu, verum kuththu, villupaattu, Jazz, instrumental pieces, stirring devotionals, classical treasures, immortal dialogues… we have featured them all. We have revisited forgotten melodies, unearthed rare riches and resurrected little-known composers and singers of yore to rightful glory. We have been surprised at songs from unreleased movies; we have been startled by the Tamil forays of Hemant Kumar and Shamshad Begum. We have expanded our horizons- exploring and embracing the musical delights from the other southern languages and Hindi. SOTD has triggered from informed posters engrossing discussions, animated debates, acrimonious exchanges, witty repartees, even studied silences… We have to confess we have not been all that regular, especially of late, but our enthusiasm and passion remain undiminished.

This, then is surely the best time to acknowledge with gratitude your constant encouragement- your responses have indeed meant a lot. Thank you! We hope to continue traveling together, rediscovering and celebrating the priceless legacy of Tamil film music…

And to roll on the revelries, here is a once popular masterpiece from an unsung melody-maker:

Song: Oraayiram kaRpanai
Film: Ezhaikkum kaalam varum
Singer: S.P.B.
Lyrics: Vaali
Music: V. Kumar

Listen Image

Another of those myriad obscure movies from the 70s, Ezhaikkum kaalam varum (1975/ Sarada Combines) had Muthuraman and Subha is its cast and was directed by S. Rajendrababu. What keeps this failed and forgotten film remaining entrenched in memory is the sheer magic of the unassuming Kumar- with characteristic munificence Kumar gave the film an album it doubtless did little to deserve. Take the lilting Yesudas-Suseela duet ‘mOham ennum raagam paadum’ for instance- so many evenings of the late 70s remain precious in memory when this delight wafted through Radio Ceylon’s mandha maarutham. And as for that rollicking ‘aattathin thalaivanum paattinil thalaiviyum’ wherein SPB, Swarna and Saibaba have had a blast; how ingenious of Kumar to merge the Tamil lines seamlessly with the opening lines of Charlie Rich’s 1973 hit ‘The Most Beautiful Girl’! Not content with this bounty, the album then claims for itself the two versions of ‘Oraayiram kaRpanai’, one by Suseela and the other more popular one by SPB. While the solo by Suseela is a woman’s forlorn appeal to her lover, SPB’s song is an endearing ode to music, and thus selects itself to mark our milestone.

‘He was a very nice man…. I am fortunate to have sung many of his songs,...’ said a ruminative SPB. He was speaking of V. Kumar when a contestant in yesterday’s edition of ‘ennOdu paattu paadungaL’ chose to sing ‘oru naaL yaarO’. Heaping heartfelt accolades on the late composer, SPB said that at a time when M.S. Viswanathan and K.V. Mahadevan were riding high, it was no mean achievement for a debutant composer to carve a distinct niche for himself, and Kumar did that. With unique rhythm patterns and inventive orchestration, Kumar brought new meaning to the word ‘melody’. Take the SOTD as case in point; with the piano as the mesmersing mainstay, Kumar crafts an immortal homage to music… SPB seems to bare his soul as he brings to life Vaali’s lines that in turn echo our diehard passion for music as well…

eththanai kaalam vaazhnthaalum
ennenna kOlam koNdaalum
en uyir naadham sangeetham..
geethamE.. naadhamE.. Odi vaa....

Let the celebrations commence!

Congratulations Dhool team!

Your dedication and efforts are truly impressive. Special thanks to Sarvanan! (should I call him The Sachin or Sehwag of dhool? Let the games (arguments) begin).

bb: Is it possible to select a few of the quotes/comments across the 1000 topics over the years and string a thread? Relevance is of course, as usual, inconsequential.

Thanks for the funny graphs. And hopes for some regularity in Sotds now, say, at least 2 Sotds in a week, if not more.

Gracious pick as 1000SOTD when Dhool celebrates in style with colorful graphs. :)
The composition invokes சலனம் இல்லாத substantial joyous feeling ... Good musical taste, charming..that's Dhool boys for us.

Thanks for sharing your wonderful friends with us.

CONGRATULATIONS & BEST WISHES!

gorgeous sunny skies, ecstatic spring day...let me grab my favorite மோகம் என்னும் ராகம் பாடும் முத்துப்பல்லக்கு ..... by யேசுதாஸ் & சுஷீலா catchy song, delightful orchestration from the same movie. Sara, நீங்களும் அந்த பாட்டு கேளுங்கோ! :D I am crazy about that song.
and மோகம் என்னும் ராகம் பாடும் முத்துப்பல்லக்கு ..... is the same tune as

Congrats Dhool Team ( BB, Saravan, Udhaya, MS and others). I am one of the silent readers here, making my presence felt only when V.Kumar song is featured.

Thanks OSIG, Anniyan, Vengayam and others for making every discussion fun and light-hearted.

This is one my favorite Kumar/SPB combo song. Moham Ennum is also another good song ( Not a song to sing in front of elders - lyrics Wise).

I would love to get other songs from this move, if any one has them.

Congrats once again!. Wishing that 2000th song milestone arrives sooner.

Venkat's blog write-up says it all. A very honest,heart-felt account of what BB,Saravanan,Udhaya,MS have collectively acheived.Every writeup of 70s and 80s are vehicles of time travel that take you back to those days ..the days when your adolecent curiosity was gaining control over innocence.

May God bless you BB,Saravanan,Udhaya and MS.All the best.

A little history from my perspective:

Dhool started off with balaji and I trying to bring as many songs to the people as possible. I remember we both encoding, uploading and filling tons of songs' info. And then we realized we had two problems:

1. Bandwidth - this is obvious
2. Originality - What were we to do more than musicindiaonline and raaga ?

That is when BB hit on the mega idea of SOTD. Initially, we both were featuring the songs and occasionally Udhaya did it. But all of this gained unprecedented momentum with Saravanan joining the team. He infused a new life with his eloquent and elaborate write-ups which boast of the rarest information regarding TFM. With him at the helm, I decided to concentrate more on the technical aspects of music which have been my passion all along. Udhaya became a regular contributor too and finally the quartet had come alive.

Apart from tamil songs, we (BB and MS) always had a great interest in tamil literature. What started as a hobby-typing of Kambaramayanam in tamiloviam by me gained momentum with the likes of Harikrishnan and BB typing so many verses out and engaging in useful discussions.

Realizing that songs were getting adequate attention from Udhaya, BB and Saravanan I thought it may be worthwhile to collect lyrics of songs and opened a section in the forum. The response was amazing and at this juncture, it is important to mention the contributions of Shri, Priya, Mynah, chandru, KMWshoe (one of the weirdest usernames !) and others who have poured in 6500 songs lyrics !!! This is a monstrous number !

It may be worth mentioning that Saravanan, Udhaya and I know nothing about how to maintain this forum. It has been a single-handed effort by BB. Every article that is written is reformatted by him and uploaded in 2 or 3 places with songs encoded by him. Don't forget that he is a father of two lovely kids and he is doing all these in the middle of changing diapers. Aruna -BB's wife deserves a special mention for her constant support. The number of hours BB has put in to keep this page up and running (in spite of a massive hacking that happened a while back) is countless and precious.

One of the benefactors rajaG also deserves a special mention since he was responsbile for lovely interviews with SPB. Sriram Laxman - the eternally mysterious character who deifies SPB and MSV is another notable mention. OISG's wisecracks and wise remarks, vinatha's exuberance, vengayam's sentiments, Anniyan's shrewd observations both about plagiarism and ragams, venkat's jazz ride and shankar's classical dabbling, Sathya's once in a blue moon thesis, and scores of others who have added color to this place --Thanks !!! Thanks !!! Thanks !!!

If not for you, dhool would have been a thiNNai discussion and not a forum where music is an expedition.

And probably the most intriguing fact is that I met BB and Udhaya only after a period of 8+ years of cyber-interaction at SFO in 2007. That is, all these years we had not met and had only talked on phone/ chatted and emailed. We had believed in each other and have entrusted mutually with responsibilities which only closest friends could easily do. I am yet to meet Saravanan.

Hence sometimes, when I look back it looks incredible that so much has been shared both personally and towards the cause of music over these many years. And we hope, with regular dhool patrons we will be able to maintain the standard and quality of content delivery. My own other musical commitments rob a lot of my time which used to be available for dhool. But as always, I will do my piece to keep this concept running for this was not created for the love of labor but is the labor of love.

I was almost there! Regarding the song

[face=Times New Roman]Hearty congrats to the dhool team[/face].( though i still feel bad about the breakaway from TFM-- saravanan's detailed explanations notwithstanding! CPI-CPM split pola thaan ithu. Yes OISG this comment is mainly for you I have wagged the red flag ! mavane poonthu vilayaadu)

While the opening line of my novel whenever it comes will still be--- once upon a time there were no computers and the world was a better place---- I do admit that but for computers and as a consequence the net I would not have struck friendship with many of you here-- Saravanan , naaz , OISG, Anniyan, CV, bb, MS,udayaa, satyakabali the list is endless. With a few I have met up and others I am still awaiting the time I would meet up.

The good thing here is the general levels of tolerant discussion have been higher than found elsewhere!

On the flipside -- the activity -- these days seems restricted only to SOTD and Lyrics page.

The readership I for know cuts across generations to youngsters like me( I am always the right " young" age to veterans like Anniyan and kids at the other end wherein I'll comfortably tie up bb, saravanan et al.

Let us enjoy this moment but let us remember this is only one milestone and there are many more milestones on our musical journey.
I may have occassionally blown my top , more often shown my ignorance and rarely shared some nugget of information. I assure that would be the case too from now on as well

It also gives me pleasure in reminding that one of the SOTDs was written by me  and but for bb it might have been two!! :(

What a remarkable landmark! Three(times 333.33) cheers to Dhool!!! No praise is too high for bb and his troupe and their unparallel dedication and sacrifice to make this site alive and going strong till this day.

Time to reflect on the pre-Dhool days of 2001....internet being restricted to a handful of computers in our unit, I used to stay 2 hours after regular hours for the purpose of downloading any available song(or two if the speed permitted it :D). Those days my knowledge of audio formats was restricted to .mp3, .au and .zip. So my strategy of looking for songs would be to google for <song>.mp3, <song>.au and <song>.zip respectively

If luck smiled, then I might end up finding a downloadable link and after directing the download to a share location, I would return to my seat(the PC meant for common usage), and keep hitting F5 for the next 45 minutes(in case the 2.5KB/sec connection tripped) till the mp3 was truly in the bag. Oh yes, there was a time when I split a priceless song into 4 parts, storing them in 4 floppies for my convenient assembling+listening pleasure.

When Dhool came in 2002 I was still a noob and didnt know you could listen to a song streamed over real player by simply clicking the link  I merely read the song intro and responses and wondered how posters could comment "good song bb" or sing the song's praises when there was no conspicuous mp3 link. I even pondered if all the posters were extraordinarily knowledgeable types recollecting the chosen song from memory

By mid 2003, I finally got the hang of it. The start of an enjoyable learning experience. Dhool just got better and better. From a trickle to a mighty river.

The thrill of "recognising" and relating to a tune as having heard before 20 years ago....no words to explain it!!!!!!!!

Among the countless pleasant surprises and delights, there is one I cannot forget. Sara featured Kalyani menon's "Nee varuvai ena" in 2004 and couple of years later I noticed someone on the web had posted a request months ago for this song. The poster vaguely recollected listening to it some 25 yrs ago. I mailed the dhool link to the song and a week later, the overwhelmed recipient sent me a reply expressing an outpouring flood of thanks, delight and joy over hearing the song after all those years.

May dhool continue to be an oasis and a treasure to all sincere fans.

Several years later, we can all talk about "those days". When we first used cellphones. Of the glory days of Tendulkar, Leander, Anand. Of Lara in his prime. Of Rahman's reign. And Dhool.com bringing to us songs timeless in value, preserved for posterity.

CONGRAGULATIONS Dhool Team ! Great and hard work. Wishing the wonderful team every success in their personal and professional lives always, and that extra time for dhool also always !

Many thanks also to the comments and info provided by fellow-travellers like Vinatha, OISG, Vengayam, Anniyan, Sathya and so many many others.

Song selection is wonderful. It is just so right to feature VK. I was going to suggest a mighty VK-LRE song 'maappillai ragasiyam sollavaa', but I guess the song is too bitter for the occassion. 'OrAyiram' is so apt.

In Micheal-Madana movie, in one scene, Raju stares at Madan in wonderment when Madan says 'catch my point' with an attitude and style. Raju says 'athellaam appadiyE varrathu thaan, ille ?'. Listening to SPB's life in 'OrAyiram' I shook my head and said the same thing.

Che. nEththu thaan kEttaa maadhiri irukku. adhukuLLaara 35 years Odi pOyiruchaa !

'kadavuLE, ippadi azhagiya pAttukkaLai padaiththu, avatrai kEtka sevi koduththAyE' ena kai kooppi kadavuLai vaNangi-koNdu, I leave the soap-box for now.

That would happen often. I would post a song, people would comment on it, say how good it is and so on, till Saravanan would call me up after some time to say the song link doesn't work :)
