Song of the Day: Same song sung by two different singers in two different languages - Part I.
http://www.dhool.com/sotd2/979.html
- MS writes:
Same song sung by two different singers in two different languages
In south Indian films it is very unusual for two different singers to sing the same song in two different languages. Usually the original singer is summoned and given the lyrics for the other language and another version is created. But there are instances when this does not happen. Music directors choose their singers based on parameters which are not very clear to the laymen. In this mini series we present those songs starting with ones sung by KJY in one language and SPB in another.
We start with Leksharchana kaNdu (malayalam) and ponnoviyam ondru (Tamil). The former has supremely poetic lyrics. You have the opportunity to compare the incomaprable greats and decide who you would like the most. Although the tamil version is kind of diluted by the not-so romantic VJ, SPB reigns supreme.

'vaa vaa anbe anbe' from agninatchiram was sung by kjy and chitra in thamizh whereas the same was sung by spb and chitra in 'gharsana'
thamizh version:

telugu version:
http://www.dishant.com/jukebox.php?songid=16453
what i will do is remove kjy from the tamil version and record spb in that space and will listen. oru alpa sandosham. |

adhe madhiri 'thoongadha vizhigal rendu' is by kjy and janaki in thamizh and 'kurisenu virijallule' is by spb and vani jayaram in telugu.
i love spb and sjanaki combo very much. telugu-lerndhu spb-yum thamizh-lerndhu janakiyum naane edit panni 'manipravala' style-la kaepen.
it was 1988-89. crude editing methods use panni pozhudhu pokkindu irupen.
enjoy these 2 versions.

KJY and SPB both did their best.. !
I think the song "vaLamaana boomiyil" by KJY in 'orE vAnam orE boomi" is sung by PJ in malayalam. This has been already featured in SOTD ...
What about some very old songs ? _________________ cuckoo is the herald of spring..!! |

Just this afternoon while driving I enjoyed vaalitezhuthiya neelakandakkannil....ONNANU NAMMAL .....Yesudas.... remember watching Homely, Young Poornima Jayaram... what an amazing humming by Janaki and violin, flute, guitar, Janaki's humming lude.. Good old Ilayaraja we all long forever! Tamil counter part Therukondu vandhavan...enakkul oruvan... Susheela's hamsadhwani. naarayanan,
No doubt it's VJ and the MD were Shankar Ganesh. It's copied from the famous BoneyM song 'rasputin'. Don't remember the movie, though...

MS,
I'm finally getting to hear these songs. Here's how I grade them:
The songs are good, not great. A good SPB rendition is only a few percentage points away from a great SPB rendition, whereas the falloff from a great KJY song to a good KJY song is much steeper.
SPB here sounds like a young stud aching to get it on, whereas KJY sounds post-coital with a few cigarettes after.
The orchestration is lackluster and affects both songs equally, but SPB's version is in a faster tempo which compensates bad orchestration better.
It was looking like a landslide victory for SPB, until VJ the great leveler came on. Don't get me wrong, I adore VJ (mid-70s Vijayabasker & MSV tunes especially) and have defended her on many occasions, but here, either due to the real player shrinking or bad mixing, she sounds like a chipmunk, like an annoying 12 year-old singer that you have to suffer at a relative's party. |

I guess this thread will lead us eventually to Mano's rendition of the Idhayaththai ThirudaadhE duplicates (original Geethanjali in Telugu by SPB). But I have something more wicked in mind Kumar Sanu's 'tu mile dil khilE' from Criminal compared to SPB's 'telusaa manasaa'. The MD also dubbed his name rom Keeravani to M.M.Kreem.
Others which come to mind
1. idhazhil kadhai ezhudhum (SPB-Chitra) from Unnaal mudiyum thambi; lalitha priya kamalam (KJY-Chitra) from Rudraveena
2. marudha marikkozhundhu vaasam (mano+chitra); yamaho nee yama yama andham (jagadeeka veerudu athiloka sundari (SPB+SJ)
3. Sangeethame Samara Sallaapame (KJY in Malayalam, SPB in Telugu) |

rajaG, that reminds me of other similar singer-voice-translations:
Adi aathadi(IR) vs Are Emaindi (SPB)
Then pandi seemaiyile (IR) vs ?????(SPB)
Potri padadi Ponne(IR) vs ?????(SPB)
The winner in these instances is not the one whose temple dhool.com is (i.e) the one on the right is not the better one. |

| on the other hand, Onna Vida (KH) vs Ninnu thappa(SPB) results in a landslide victory for the latter |

rajsrini,
Your IR v. SPB comment is definitely a first for me. I've never heard that sentiment before.
I usually point out IR's rendition of Idhayam oru Koyil and SPB's version of it just to show people how much SPB brings to a sandham dictation by IR. |

| udhaya, no doubt you sure havent heard that before. But listen to SPB's telugu version - maybe flawless from rendition perspective but dont bring the emotion in the scene as much as IR's version does, especially adi aathadi. |

spb scores jus like that in the tamil version compared to kjy's isabgol attempt in telugu. though am not averse to kjy, this song is an absolute bliss in balu's voice.
of course, i admit kjy's 'raja raja chozhan' is better than spb's 'chanda mama' in rendu thokkala pitta, though the latter sounds a little 'sumaar' not due to any fault of spb.

"Vaigakkarai kaatre ...." rendered by KJY in Tamil, and Baalu's Telugu rendition of the song "sakkanaina vo chirugaali".
I like both the versions in equal measure. No clearcut favorite. |

| I personally like 'Lalitha Priya Kamalam' far better than the Tamil version. Lyrics of Seetharama Sastry is outstanding and that raises the Telugu version a notch higher than the Tamil one. The constant factor in both the renditions is Chitra, who does an excellent job, especially in Telugu, where Seetarama Sastry's words are pretty tough. |
