MD: Soorya. Singer: Sujatha.
Once in a while an evening opens up in your schedule where a planned thing falls apart and affords you the time to actually do what you would otherwise consider a luxury. This happened to me last week where a few hours opened up during a rainy Tuesday. After a lazy dinner I strolled along to one of the Indian music stores nearby just to see what the kids are into these days. My eyes immediately fell on a shelf for Thamizh music where unpopular CDs had been marked down to clear out. Out of curiosity I went digging and bagged myself a boxful of no name CDs made by no names. I haven't gone through the whole bunch yet, but the scavenger hunt has already been worthwhile for the SOTD. The movie "Neela Kuyil" could've come out any time in the past 10 years, those in the know can verify.
This is a decent semi-classical song from an unknown MD, Soorya. The composition and orchestration are straightforward and that's not a bad thing when you have flute, mirudhangam and veenai. Soorya shows some temptation to launch a keyboard assault in the first interlude, but then either fear or good taste rein his instincts in. Thankfully the song soars from thereon.
Vaali, as he's wont to do, teases profundity and settles for the mundane. But the reason that merits this as a SOTD is Sujatha. It's not everyday we get to hear her innately sweet voice in TFM, that too in a classical setting. There's fragility to her voice like soft rain, and everywhere the song trickles inside me is healed and refreshed.
