Song of the Day: naan oru ponnOviyam from kaNNil theriyum kadhaigaL.
http://www.dhool.com/sotd2/569.html
- Venkat writes:
It happened twice in the TFM world; Five music directors scoring a song each in the same movie. In 2002, Vasanth directed the miserably titled "Hey, nee romba azhaga irukkE". The five MDs were; Srinivas, Raghav-Raja, Murugavel, Ramesh Vinayakam and Arvind-Shankar (Wait a sec! It is five or seven!). For someone who directed movies with excellent scores like kEladi kaNmani,
Rhythm Vasanth indeed touch his nadir.
Prior to this, in 1980 actor A.L. Raghavan produced magnificiently titiled 'kaNNil theriyum kathikaL' which had five MDs - each scoring a song. They were; GK Venkatesh, TR Pappa, KV Mahadevan, Shankar-Ganesh and Illayaraja. KTK was a Sharathbabu, Sripriya, Vadivukkarasi starrer. While the songs scored by the elders, with two initials each , faded into oblivion, two others stood (stand) out. SG produced the mellifluous 'naan unnai nenecchEn', sung by SPB, Jikki and Vani Jayaram. Great song!
But, the ultimate winner was Illayaraja's 'naan oru ponnoviam kaNdEn' - sung by SPB, P.Susheela and S Janaki. Coming to think of it, these three have dominated the south indian film music for about 150 years collectively!
The song was composed to classical dance sequence. Raja has scored tonnes of amazing songs in mOhana raagam, starting from BadhrakaLi's kannan oru kaikkuzhanthai. Perhaps Agni Natchththiram's ninnukOri is the most unique of them all. I am still amazed at this.
SOTD is another great song in mOhanam. Starting from the prelude the composition and orchesterizaiton is superb. SPB does a great job. PS and SJ sing in unison to great perfection. Raja simply goes berserk with Violins, Veena, Mridhangam. None could handle chorus as perfectly as him.
The song was written by pulamaippiththan. He has written some great songs for MGR movies (and was later a Court Poet when MGR came to power). When MGR's protege RM Veerappan produced Thangamahan (under Satya Movies) pulamaippiththan was right there, wth 'raaththiriyil pUththirukkum'. After a long gap Illayaraja recalled him for Bharathi and PP responded with 'ethilum ingu iruppaan avan yarO'.
I do not know how this song was picturized. Can't imagine Sharathbabu dancing. He might have been there in a corner, clad in a jibba, lip syncing SPB. Nor can I imagine vadivukkarasi dancing. Sripriya - could have done a decent job. Does anyone recall?
As far the movie - it was soon consigned to /dev/null. AL Raghavan threw his towel. So what? Producing a movie with five MDs and with two great songs in rarest combinations (SPB-Jikki_Vani Jayaram and SPB-PS-SJ) ALR ensured his name in TFM for eternity.
- The other songs in the film: KVM (Vettaikkaaran malaiyilae- TMS), TR Papa (Onnu rendu moonu- BSS/SPS), GKV (Naan paartha rathidevi - ALR).
- Suyamvaram, which was shot in "24 hours" (and definitely looked like it) also had multiple MDs. |

nothing to worry much ! though vadivukkarasi and Sripriya are wearing dance dress.. only sripriya strikes some real movements. Instead of showing vadivukkarasi dancing, they use to show some sculptures with nice poses... (sarath babu just jumping once or twice.. thats all!) ..
still remembering the whistles at theatre when vadivukkarasi walks in a different way.. ! _________________ cuckoo is the herald of spring..!! |

Venkat, you were blessed having not seen the song in TV oliyum oLiyum NoR the complete movie. As you said, SBabu wears white silky jibba in this song. Where is SPB's style and where is this very weak hero. May be the worst choice of cast lead to crash in the box-office.
Vadivu, right from her career start, was best fit for mother (arrogant mamiyAr) character. In this song, she was in natya dress. Haiyo!! Another crab in the cast.
It was just ok with Sripriya. PS sings for her and SJ for Vadivu.
The weather must have been very hot when the song was shot and all 3 actors shinking their eyes intolerant of the hot-sun and sweat (ovve).
The best part in this best song was PS-SJ singing togther the swarajadhigaL before 3rd sharaNam. You could make out both their voices with full concentration. I would have listened to this bit several 100 times. |

Though the song was major hit (naan onna nenachen) there was a discomfort or disconnect. VJ voice was very young whereas Jikki who gave voice for sripriya was very down lacking tenderness. This is my opinion.
SOTD takes lead with its richness in sangathis. Esp PS ending the charanam and takes the pallavi naan oru ponnoviyam kanden idhile. Like a dazzling wave..!
I always have a doubt. Whether this was track-recorded or all 3 sang together. In my opinion, SJ' part was added later, as I see the wavelength very well matching between SP's & PS's.
Marvellos piece by IR, though the song had many double meaning words like kuri podal, suvai thedal etc |

| Grand song. though its of 3 paras, one does not get tired of listening. Great work by IR and the 3 stars (not Sarathbabu, Vadiukarasi and Sripriya; i mean SPBala, Suseela and Janaki) |

Excellent song from Illayaraja, SPB, PS & SJ. This movie was released
in 1980. Even after 24 years, I enjoy listening to this song. |

A Grand Mohanam once again from IR. Like "adaatha manamum undo" wherein one can hardly recollect the lines of MLV against those of TMS,in this song SPB certainly makes the queens look like "la la la peNgaL" aka "kuzhuvinar".
When he sings "Tham thom" and "Mangala vaadhiyangaL" the omkaram in his voice is breathtaking.Atleast 2 of ALR's too many cooks did not spoil the broth, rather enriched the measly food with vitamins. Like Vengayam my vote for the top song is still "naan unnai ninachen" where VJ matches SPB point for point.Whose century one would vote for Dravid's or Lakshman's at Calcutta against the Aussies? |

Apart from the semi classical (or kind-of) touch, one thing that was enjoyable in this song was the rhythm arrangement...kind of trade mark Raja...He had so many of such unique patterns generated in his early years (before delegating that department to assistants:-)) and the SOTD had one of those enjoyable ones...I'm sure Raja reused this in other songs later on, but none became as popular as this...
Another song ( again a dance number) which had novel rhythm arrangement was `thAm tha dheem tha Adum uLLam pAdum kAviyam' from pagalil oru iravu... |

"When he sings "Tham thom" and "Mangala vaadhiyangaL" the omkaram in his voice is breathtaking"
OISG,
On so many hundred occasions SPB brings that sublime thunder in his voice in Telgu, Kannada and Tamil songs, whenever the occasion demands so.
What a sensitive musical soul this man had! |
