Song of the Day: ninaithu paarkkiREn from avaL thantha uRavu.

http://www.dhool.com/sotd2/695.html

- Saravanan writes:

These beauteous forms,
Through a long absence, have not been to me
as is a landscape to a blind man's eye:
But oft, in lonely rooms, and 'mid the din
of towns and cities, I have owed to them
in hours of weariness, sensations sweet,
Felt in the blood, and felt along the heart;
and passing even into my purer mind,
with tranquil restoration….

- William Wordsworth (Lines composed a few miles above Tintern Abbey…)

This month, I will be sharing with you some of my fondest memories of MSV- a few of his songs from the 70s that have become rare to listen to these days, but these are surely ones that those of you blessed to have grown up in the late 70s have preserved in a precious pedestal of your heart….songs that both vividh bharathi and thamizh sEvai iraNdu (not to leave out Madras A of Sunday evenings) celebrated and cherished…songs that you waited (albeit mostly in vain!) with bated breath to watch on oLium oliyum Friday after Friday (and how joyous was that wait!)…songs that were the subject of animated discussions with your friends at school…songs that your elder cousins insisted on singing during fun filled vacations…songs from those myriad movies of that ‘black & white and bell-bottoms’ era that had (and deservedly too!) but a passing presentation at the pergola…songs that went unobtrusively into hiding as the years rolled by…the same songs that tug at your memory chords at those inexplicable moments when you put aside the work you’re doing and look out of the window with a wistful sigh…

While MSV is often revered for his trail-blazing works in the 60s, his works in the 70s were no less magnificent; he surely deserves a smart salute for humble, hidden wonders like these.

Let us begin this unabashed indulgence in nostalgia with that elusive ‘ninaithu paarkkiREn’ from avaL thantha uRavu:

Sung by SPB
Lyrics by Kannadasan
Music by M.S.Viswanathan

* * * *

avaL thantha uRavu (MNS Enterprises) was a Pongal release of 1978 (along with maduraiyai meetta sundarapaNdiyan and vaazha ninaithaal vaazhalam). G. Srinivasan wrote the dialogues for Netaji's story. Muthuraman, Saradha, Manohar, Kavitha, M.N.Rajam, Surulirajan and Manorama were in the cast. The film was produced by Shanmugam, K.S.Sultan and S.P.Nagarajan, and directed by Durai.

Image

I have not seen the film; I have not seen the songs on TV either. Another popular song from the film is ‘manjaL itta nilavaaga, mai poosum kalaiyaaga’, that propitious chronicle of a brother’s wishes for his sister’s joyous marital life. Sung gracefully by PS, the song’s surprise element is Muthuraman reciting the charaNam lines like ‘thaalaattum thanga mEniyum manjaL neerinil aada, thai maadha pongal pOlavE chinnapunnagai Oda..’. The third song is 'O veettukkaaramma, oru paattu paadamma' by Kovai Soundararajan, L. R Eswari and B.S. Sashirekha.

* * * *

‘ninaithu paarkiREn en nenjam inikkindRathu’ was, of course, a great favorite among us; even today I can recall my classmates rendering the opening lines with gusto, especially going overboard with the ‘oh my daaarleeng’ bit!

The master tunesmith comes up with a winsome composition, and sends for SPB to do the honours.

Image

Listening to it today, I find so many nuances that were hidden to my childish ears then. There is a hint of some inner anguish in the lyrics, and MSV incorporates that tinge of sorrow into his tune. SPB brings out this “looking back in joy mixed with just a trace of regret” angst in inimitable style. The trumpets, flute, guitar, drums and jalatharangam that MSV fills the interludes with cascade in cadence with the gush of memories that seems to haunt the hero. There is so much beauty in the song, that I feel slightly ashamed when I realize that leaving aside all this, the ‘oh oh remember….’ parts seemed the most attractive to me then!

Nonetheless, this is one of the treasured songs that take me back in time, filling me with unfathomable rapture…

A song. A sojourn. A sepia toned kaleidoscope of happy memories.

Yes Saravanan, I could recall those joyous days when songs like this SOTD were aired repeatedly. This is a beautiful song and was a super hit. Though I cannot write about a song like you that I enjoyed the same way you have enjoyed is true. But frankly, I could cherish the other song in the film Manjal itta nilavaaga like anything. Even recently I was thinking about this song particularly during Fridays where I cannot forget those days when VB used to air songs that would have the effect of auspiciousness i.e., mangalagaram viz. Komaatha engaL kulamatha, Kungumam mangala mangaiyar, Vellimani osaiyiley, vilakkettri vaikkiraen, Manjalum thandhaaL, Vaazhi nalam soozha (Ponnaana Vaazhvu/KVM) and the like.

Saravanan, in the same song Manjal itta nilavaaga I also remember Muthuraman reciting these verses Sripaadam deva devargal vedha mandhiram odha; sridevi madurai nayaki somasundarar kooda (correct?). Pl think of bringing that song also in SOTD soon. Will you?

saravanan
Tremendous writing. Believe me, we use to count the names in MADRAS.A and the song which gets highest number of request will be declared as SONG OF THE WEEK. Trumpet in the end gives different mood. I think only you can bring out such rare memories by your writing.

As promised earlier please write about YARRUM ILLAI INGEY.by spb&ps.

one more request : song from the film MAAGATHUKKAM THAGAMOONDU.
MAARAGATH MEGAM SINDHUM by spb/ps.

The master tunesmith comes up with a winsome composition, and sends for SPB to do the honours.

Yes rare composistion and NADANA SALAIGALALIL NATHIEEN OORANGALLIL . SPB SPB THAAN

i had heard this many years ago.yet once i read the opening lines i could recognise it and could remember many of the lines if not all. MSV did give a fablous treat in the 1970s and although most of the films might have been forgotten by now the songs are not. SPB's voice in the late 70s was different from his voice in early 70s. MSV had given many beautiful duets in 70s with SPB-VJ, SPB-PS. Once again you have made us happy . thanks a lot

'I am waiting to get home to hear Balu '

That was from the above posting. I say the same :)

A typical SPB (and MSV) song which enchanted so many listeners of the radio era ! Such songs refuse to be erased from memory even when one hasn't heard it for years!

SARAVANAN, WONDERFUL. Will be listening to this song after 27 years. Yes, the sentimental and emotional attachment to some of the songs cannot be described. Especially high school time romantic songs :-) In a fraction of a second a melody can transport you to an entirely different world that you can smell, see, feel and yes, almost touch.

So many people fail to understand this excitement about 'film' music (intha vayasula carnataka isaiya kEtkAma ithenna cinema pAttu cinemA pAttunnu), senti-motivated searches for long-forgotten and rare old songs and all that. (It is not always senti-oriented alone, some of that music is simply non-recreatable) I am happy to visit here to be among 'weirdos' like myself.

I am yet to listen to it, writing from work (dont have realplayer at work), cant wait to go home and listen. ippave ezhunthu pOgaNum pOla irukku.

Yes, the 'remember' is easily remembered, but the slight hint of pathos underlying the entire song is also remembered.

Sorry, earlier post was also mine.

Anyway, Saravanan, somehow I remember this as the song sung by the younger Sivaji (son of JJ and senior Sivaji)in a club, in PAttum Bharathamum. Outrageous-A paLa-paLa jacket, cooling glass ellAm pOttukittu oru club-la Sivaji pAduvAr. ithu antha pAttu illayi-nnA, athu entha pAttu ?

Hi Surgrutha
In a fraction of a second a melody can transport you to an entirely different world that you can smell, see, feel and yes, almost touch.

You are right. I use to feel the same way. I read about "ENGIRONTHU AASIGAL song from this site. someone quoted that MSV made to us to feel ENGIRONTHU(UNKNOWN WORLD) from this beauty. Nice way to describe the feeling.

saravanan, Great! This one is sure to get etched even on a first time listener.

This brings back my childhood days when I would should "oh, oh, remember" and jump a step or two in the backdoors holding my loose "arai douser" in one hand. This one is missing in my collection of old SPB songs.

This is way off topic, but, I often wonder how it'll be to match up the modern recording technology with the creativity in some of these old numbers. The goal should be to have the same singer, identical orchestration, but much better sound engineering.

The hard part may be to stay loyal to the original track. With the exception of SPB, none of the singers of that era is in good vocal shape. (Even SPB may not be able to recreate his boyish voice).

That should show the kids who think AR Rahman is the only one. (Never mind, that was flippant). But the point is that most of the new numbers need a good sound system and all the audio wizardry to make them listenable.

I think upgradation is not up to the mark. Some of them tried by converting mono to streo but without success. Famous cine sound engg(worked almost 40 years) said he felt very satisfied with those days quality and recording compare to current technology. He further said he is not able to get that satisfaction while recording PESUVATHU KILIYA song in PANNA THOTTAM while comparing with current technology.

Even KB said he will prefer to shoot in black &white to bring the originality.

What a vibrant, ornate dazzler that epitomizes the bohemian 70's era!!!
Even those with 2 left feet cannot help swinging to SPB's yodelling feat.
Kudos to Sara!!! I used to imagine Kamal for this song.
Sara there is another MSV-SPB combo in "Naam pirandha maNN" which Iam unable to recollect. Can you bring forth that too?

Lovely tune and competent singing. Visu visu thaan!
I could add something more about Muthuraman - as a tangent- but because Thambi frowns on it I refrain from doing so. :(
while SPB's darling and remember are definitely better than TMS' it still looks pretty amateurish now doesn't it.. Much like My sooong is (h) for yooou in Paatum barathamum from the same combo..
Oh there I go again.

Its really heartening to find so many kindred souls! Thank you, all, for your responses, and for sharing your memories too. This song seems to be very special for many of us.

Mythila, as SL has pointed out, thats the one from naam piRantha maN. Next two lines are 'paalam pOdungaL yaaraavathu, paadi aadungaL indRaavathu..' SPB singing for Kamal.

Sugrutha, frankly, 'my song is for you' is not among my SPB favorites :)
Lines like 'azhagu koondhal koNdaaL- avaLoru sixteen, aanalum avaL endhan kaNNil sexteen' add to the irritation. The saving grace is SPB unexpectedly breaking into 'ennadi rakkamma' in the end!
