- Parineeta is the latest film produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra (1942 - A love story, Munnabhai MBBS). It is directed by adfilm maker Pradeep Sarkar. Vidhu Vinod Chopra has written the screenplay based on the novel Parineeta by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay.

The film stars Sanjay Dutt, Saif Ali Khan, Raima Sen and a newcomer, Vidya Balan, who looks very beautiful in the film stills. Check her out, she is a classical beauty. The film has generated a lot of pre-release hype and we need to wait and see if the hype is justified for this period piece or whether it will suffer the same fate as last year's Rituparno Ghosh's Chokher Bali. It is slated for release next month or so.

Music for the film is by Shantanu Moitra, a debutant. The songs are refreshingly fresh and subdued, unlike recent Hindi albums. On repeated listenings, I got more accustomed to the songs and started humming certain lines. As the movie probably requires, the album seems to hark back to Bengali culture and music. Most of the songs are by Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal. There is one song, "Raat Hamari" sung very well by our own Chitra. Chitra's singing is very impressive, probably her best effort in recent times, inspite of her heavy southern accent. There is an old styled jazzy number by Sunithi Chauhan, "Kaisi Paheli".

The SOTD is sung by Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal, with the initial voice-over by Saif Ali Khan. Close your eyes and listen to this simple, melodious song. It starts off with a piano piece, and then moves over to tabla and flute.

You missed out Mission Kashmir which had some good numbers by SEL. The Roshan-PZ duet by Shankar and Sunidhi was a cute and lovely one. The film also had a superb performance by wonderful looking Sonali Kulkarni(May Madham).

Despite my known dislike for Bollywood stuff (unless ARR or SEL are involved) I liked this song. Apart from Udit & Sadhana ,Sonu Nigam is one another singing talent Bollywood can feel proud of.With perfect pronounciation from "Acha sila" to Mumbai Express he gives a whole-hearted performance each time. In this song too he is exceptional. He gave an outstanding performance in this Film fare award function and when he sang the Ashiquee number in Kumar Sanu's voice i could not control mylaughter.

The music is soothing and ear-friendly.

The real Bengal must be somewhere between Satajit Ray and Sanjay Leela Bansali (Devdos). Hope Pradeep and Vindod let us know what exactly Bengal is or was. Atleast in the promos the Art Direction looked ok. The familiar brown tint captures the period effect well.

The name Vidya Balan sounds familiar I think, few years back she had one or two tamizh films. But looks like they never came out.

RC :)) Not yet, I will have to see the film to decide whether Vidya Balan is that good.

OISG, yes, Sonu Nigam is pretty good. It is interesting to compare "Piyu Bole" with "Ekla Chalo" from ARR's Bose. Sonu NIgam has sung both, both have a distinct Bengali flavor (the latter starts off with a Rabindranath Tagore song).

Vidya Balan is actually the girl resembling y.y. actress Kanchana or the other one in the still. The other one only has a classical beauty, has n't she? Kanchana resembling actress appears in a detergent ad. She also acted in a Tamil film what happend to that film?
