SOTD #642: kaatril varum geethamE from oru naaL oru kanavu

Song of the Day: kaatril varum geethamE from oru naaL oru kanavu.

http://www.dhool.com/sotd2/642.html

- oru naaL oru kanavu is the latest film by Fazil. His last tamil film was kaNNukkuL nilavu. The film stars Srikanth and Sonia Agarwal. Music by Ilayaraja.

- The film is supposed to be another love story, and the expectations are high given Fazil's track record. Fazil has done films like poovE poochooda vaa, poovizhi vaasalilE that were not romantic movies, but kaadhalukku mariyaadhai changed all that and brought in a new genre of "family oriented" romances. Srikanth and Sonia have had hits recently, with Kanaa kaNdEn and 7/G Rainbow Colony respectively.

- oru naaL oru kanavu has three songs by Sonu Nigam, and a couple by Hariharan and Shreya Ghoshal. After listening to the songs, I thought the album was par for the course for IR and Fazil. The SOTD, kaatril varum geethamE, is the pick of the lot. It is a kalyaNi based song sung by Bhavatharini, Shreya Ghoshal and Hariharan. Bhavatharini's unconventional voice for this classical number will probably turn off some, but I liked the uniqueness that it brought to the song. Given that we rarely see such classical songs thesedays, this is a good attempt by IR. One negative point was that IR hadn't given any importance to the percussion in the song. A tabla loop just goes on and on, not even changing much during the interludes. I wonder why there was no effort taken to create an interesting percussion accompaniment in this song.

Great pick, bb. Nice to see IR regain some of his magic. The melody fits like a favorite old outfit, familiar and comfortable. When I heard it in Raaga.com, they had an extensive track where IR discusses the situation and the lyricist comes up with several pallavis before settling on this. I tried searching for the lyricist and couldn't find the name. Can anyone help?

I too thought Pava was acceptable in this song, perhaps the few years since her last attempt (that I heard) have aged her voice a bit.

Udhaya, the other voice that you hear in that track is that of Vaali, your favourite lyricist ;-)

Great job guys! I was waiting for you to feature this Raaja's gem!!! Thanks! Classical number starts with bhava’s singing with soothing flute bits and tabla! The interludes are short , second interlude flute is a mesmerizing short piece! The second charanam is my favorite with swaras and Shri.Ilyaraaja joins with Hari at the end , fantastic. Very mellifluous singing by Bhava, shreya, Hari but yenakku devotional feeling varalai.

Vijay,
yov, nakkalaa? I had my doubts because Vaali sounds so spry for a 70+ year-old guy. Then again how many other living lyricists would IR address as annae.

"How many living artists would address IR as annae?"
Udhaya, Gangai Amaran would :-) (and I know you do consider him an artist :-)

sara, got it. though late. For a moment I thought Udhaya meant valee was calling iR annae, which though would be age-wise incorrect, a feat not beyond valee's sychophantic nature :-)
