DeepavaLi Special - II : Conversations with M.S.V
Sriram Lakshman has had the opportunity to interact with several film personalities and discuss their music. M.S.Viswanathan has been his favorite and he has a vast knowledge of MSV's songs. He is going to share his conversations with MSV.
Here is the first part for DeepavaLi: http://www.dhool.com/msv |

| Varavendum Oru Pozhudu was an excellent choice by SL to open the conversation. Hoping to read more on Karnan songs too. |

| Kalai kovil - Iam clueless about the actors or the movie itself, but going by the songs, it appears to me as a garland of amazing variety offered at the altar of the Temple of Art. "Deviyar iruvar" reverbs with PS's mindblowing akaara saadhakam, "Naan unnai serndha selvam" is a song that I often hum involuntarily and "varavendum" must have been the inspiration material for future hit songs like "palinginaal oru maaligai" |

Add "thangaradham vandhadhu" by BMK to complete the repertoire in Kalaikovil. Chitralaya Gopu , as assistant to Sridhar, when talking in the "Mellisai mannarin Isai payanam" programme opn Jaya Tv sometime back was raving about this song, for MSV had embellished the tune with one tough sangathi after another. MSV responded by saying that the singer was BMK and hence all the extra ornamentation.
MSV is also a good piano player and its his hands which are shown in the close-up shot of the song "enna enna vaarthaigaLo" in VeNNira aadai, playing the notes. Otherwise Srikanth would be playing the piano in that song. |

Sriram, Congratulations to coming forward to persist your memories for the sake of the "currently oblivious to" MSV's music and the future generations!
A line in your article said it all:
"Yes, the lack of intent to articulate the nuances of composing or plain and simple……forgetfulness"
Well, forgetfuness yes, but I don't think it's the lack of "intent" to articulate. I think, MSV simply can't articulate because there was no thought process involved in his compositions. It's the divine intervention that passed through his genius. And like you said "it happened". If it weren't, we wouldn't be glorifying him like this. Thank God, he didn't "study" music like some "grand" music composers did! |

He indeed studied carnatic thoroughly. He tried his chances as a carnatic singer in Madras. And I am wondering when he picked up piano. _________________ MS (Murali Venkatraman)

SL,
Thank You for a wonderful write-up. I wouldn't call it an 'interview', for you have taken it to the next level of a critical commentary. It is really nice to know so much of info about MSV, the giant of Tamil Film Music, through your write-up and the responses of so many others here.
I am just curious to know how tall the 'giant' is? He looks unusually short in all his pictures |

| It was more of an honest recollection of what transpired during the conversation (mind you not an interview) and questions were squeezed when I was sure that I wouldn't get a 'commonplace' answer. Thanks for the favourable response. |

‘en manasula irukkarathai avargaL (singers) kodukkara varaikkum vida mAttEn. ithukku thAn nAnE singers-ai train paNNuvEn. No assistants here.’
Exactly what PS mentioned about MSV, that he will never give up until he gets what he wants. She also mentioned that it was MSV who brought the best out of her. We all know that ! |

SL, nice narration.
If you are going to meet him again, pls ask MSV "why he used P.B.S in pal vannan paruvam kandu for MGR". Those days TMs was the main singer for MGR. |
