SOTD #576: AgAya gangai from Dharmayutham

Song of the Day: AgAya gangai from Dharmayutham.

http://www.dhool.com/sotd2/576.html

- Sung by Malaysia Vasudevan and S.Janaki. Music by Ilayaraja. Lyrics by M.G.Vallaban.

- Another one of IR's 70s classics. The start of the song is fantastic. SJ's humming and the buildup in the prelude sets the stage for a good song. Then comes Malaysia Vasudevan and his unique voice! I always thought that if it was yet another SPB sung number, the song would probably be forgotten by now. There are people who hate MV's singing in general and in this song in particular, but somehow, I think this song is embellished by his rendition.

- Dharmayutham had S.P.Shailaja shrieking in "ada pOyyaa pOyyaa ulagam perisu" and more of Malaysia Vasudevan in "oru thanga radhaththil". Dharmayutham was a R.C.Shakthi film starring Rajinikanth.

Wonderful choice!! Thanks, bb.

I am trying not to think of Thengai and his 'Black Roses'

And I expect OISG will come along soon and write about Sridevi and her fractured leg

Yes this is one of a handfull of M Vasudevan songs that can be savoured.
the swerve, verve of singing is matched by the rough edge of Malaysia & syrupy Janaki.
In today's context where every Kuppan, suppan and mookan regardless of the situation shake a leg in New Zealand or sun City this song has been so endearingly shot in Guindy race course. Balakrishnan behind the camera I suppose. Saravana confirm pannidu.... OISG this was Sridevi pre nose fixing isn't it

A good movie with 2 great songs.Rajini carried Sridevi during the song and himself well throughout the movie. Should be among one of Rajini's better performances.

Thengai with his striped pant and coat  Chittor Nagaiah would have been a better choice. But "Follow me .....again follow me" was enjoyable.Robert Montheoro says "Mercy" to show his french conncetion!

Vizhundhadhu Sridevi udaindhadhu en manathu! You can see Sridevi sitting for most part of the song ,Rajini providing support at times while she stands and Rajini crowns by lifting her. RC Shakthi was all praise for Sri and her commitiment to complete the song.Pre-op Sri nose it was :) But as Getafix always had something to say on Cleopatra's nose - What a nose? :D

Sridevi is shown as a news reader in a colour TV when Colour Transmission was atleast 3-4 years away! But i love the scene when the Rajini meets Sri at the DD gate just before this song. The chemistry was perfect followed by this immortal song. One more song where IR could get MV's mouth partly stitched and closed. SJ shows the way and MV simply follows suit.Memorable, scintillating and i run out of words. The violin, the humming by SJ- a dreamy experience any day. Thanks for the choice. Lyrics -plain and ordinary

BTW Laksmisri ,i thought was Gandhimathi's daughter. My sheer thought was enough to kill her

One of the very few songs where MV excels!

Yeh.. raasathi raasathi from En Uyir Thozhan is another good one.

Saravanan,
I too rememeber the My dear Chocolate Uncle and Black Roses part.. but rather fondly. I thought
Thengai was pretty comical as the villain :)

OISG

Vengayam, you're right- it was Balakrishnan behind the camera. It was 'Saruchitra' TR Srinivasan's production btw. There was another song too- 'Disco sound' sung by someone called Hariram, who also wrote the inane English lyrics. Ramola moans, groans and giggles in between.

SJ's humming in the interlude is unforgettable!

GK, do you remember Thengai screaming "I want black roses!"

Saravanan
Yes and his "Guards catch him" , while gesturing to his "adi-atkal" to catch Rajini, in his unique over-acting way.

Saravanan...I think the best dialogue belonged to Rajini though.

"Black Roses-na manidha kangala? Bastaaaaaaaaaard"

GK, Kitcha

The film was quite a hit- so wonder why RC Shakthi wasn't tempted to do some more such commercial stuff!

I think the best dialogue was" Follow me - close up to Thengai's grotesque vermillion lipstick- agggaiN Follow me (ahh)! "to his henchmen in the climax.

This one film turned the fortunes for Rajni. Following the Midland theatre fracas, - there is an intersting aside as to why that incident happened I read about it in some thread in TFM- a couple of Producers shelved their films with Rajni and others were waiting with bated breath for this flick. this movie was a hit and all was forgiven! Billa followed soon after and there was no looking back!(athisayapiravi, siva, baba notwithstanding)

It is hard to believe that MVD sung this song.
If Mano in the late 80s and the 90s displayed the perfect imitation of the gimmicky voice and style of SPB, M Vasudevan does the same here with regard to the charged voice of SPB.
