Song of the Day: un kaadhOdu from nijangaL.

Listen Image

- Saravanan writes:

un kaadhOdu from nijangaL

Sung by SPB & S.P. Shailaja
Lyrics by Vaali
Music by M.B. Srinivasan

nijangaL (Ramya Chitra/ 1982) was an unconventional movie that juxtaposed the break-down of a long distance bus with the lives of the passengers traveling therein. Sivakumar, Suman, S.V. Shekhar, Menaka, Deepa, Cho, Y.G. Parthasarathi and Anandi were in the cast. Directed by K.S. Sethumadhavan, the movie had some thought provoking dialogues written by ‘vietnam veedu’ Sundaram. An upcoming Madhu Ambat’s cinematography was another pleasant feature of the movie.

Image

‘nijangaL’ was the last Tamil movie MBS composed music for, and he left his indelible signature in all the 3 songs in the album. The haunting ‘amma undhan kai vaLaiyaai’ was earlier featured as SOTD here:

http://www.dhool.com/sotd2/426.html

Listen now to this dainty duet of whispery caresses. As is often the norm in songs of this genre, the man is athirst with inflamed passions and pleads to her for succor. Though similarly aroused, the demure damsel counsels patience and restraint. Both put forth their arguments citing fetching analogies. Who other than SPB can coat each syllable with so much longing! Shailaja plays ‘shy lajja’ as she wards off the man’s advances with bashful tenacity.

The guitar and the drums are imaginatively employed all along to lend the song an ambience of furtive romance. The fact that the 2 interludes are similar does not in any way take away the song's allure. It is in nostalgic reminiscences of such simple elegance that MBS lives on and blooms….

Mmm Hmm Hmm.
I am uncomfortable with both MBS and Salil chaudhary. No amount of persuasion - including "Thennan keetrin unjal" convinces me about their suitability for 'film' music. This song is no exception.

They were good for koodi paaduvom aka choir singing.
I know I'll get flak from the usual quarters but there it is..

Vow ! Sweet song.

I have heard it in Vanoli nilayam in the 80s. Even Shyam followed the same style somewhat .

Having seen MBS regularly in Dhoordharshan with a big chorus group, this song was a surprise package then :D

MBS is a highly talented man! Highly respectable person in music industry.

Thank u very much Saravanan.

"shy lajja" - sounds so un-Saravanan like pun. Does OISG have anything to do with this invention? :-)

Dear Saravanan,
Thanks for the song.

Indha padal - engaeyo - sandhoshamana naatkalai ninaika vaikiradhu....Andha natkalai izhandhadharku, varuthamum kudavae vandhadhu...

SPB patriyum, Padal patriyum sonna ungal varthaigal en manadhai reflect seidhadhai pola irundhadhu Saravanan....

who other than SPB can coat each syllable with so much longing

The fact that the 2 interludes are similar does not in any way take away the song's allure. It is in nostalgic reminiscences of such simple elegance that MBS lives on and blooms -

NICE WORDS about the song...

With Love,
Usha Sankar.

Absolutely fabulous song. When I discovered this song, it was a happening in my life. It hit me with a jolt of joy. I've been meaning to host this song for awhile, but details have been sketchy and I don't have the best quality file. Now, Saravanan has done the honors.

A cozy, discreet as a whisper ambience that gets richly served by SPB and SPS. I'm imagining a misty lake, lovers sheltering under a shade as the fresh breeze keeps the bodies perked and the fires lit.

vengayam,
I'm not itching for a debate or anything, but I'm amazed that this song doesn't move you. Truly amazed.

Saravanan,
It s SPB all the way.In that husky voice ,he simply dazzles. The lyrics are pedestrian.Simple and stylish interludes. I always look to your write-ups on MBS. They are paradigm presentations presented in perfect chronology, woven with details ,with a constant undercurrent of human touch and blended with your inner desire to share the wealth of info you have on an unsung genius, with the readers. Thanks for this wonderful song.Brought back memories of 1982 and Menaka, one of the many zillion கனவுக் கன்னிs I had! (you could have avoided "shy lajja"-see where it has landed you in? )

I did not see this movie. But the storyline reminds me of P.Madhvan's "Payanam" (*ing Jayachithra,Major,Vijayakumar).

Rajsrini,

Happy that so many of you rediscovered the delight of this song! Thanks for all the responses.

Vengayam, while I do allow that we don't have to necessarily agree on everything, like Udhaya, I am too truly amazed that you did not like this song!

Rajsrini, that coinage was on the spur of the moment. Reading it later, I was even tempted to withdraw it. But seeing that it has been mistaken for an OISG invention, I'm proud of it now :D

Udhaya & Saravanan,

Because both of you were amazed I heard the song around for a second time today. Ok , by todays' standard- D Iman, Dhina, Vijay anthony and such like- the song is good. But that is about it! I discerned a Shankar Ganesh flavour. Can't say if it is good or bad. I think your liking for MBS asa human being has raised your rating a couple of notches.

I am sorry to disappoint you but that is the way it is :(

"Menaka enadhu kanavu kanni" -so spake OISG - idhukkappuram ungalai vechu naan enna comedy pannaradhu ;-)

Kidding...it was meant to be a compliment.
Sara, shy lajja was OISG-esque alright but still coming from you, its like watching "naan dhaan sagala kala vallavan" ina Mahendran movie -yes, I like the song but I wouldnt expect it ina Mahendran movie :-)

rajsrini,
yes, but you missed a point, even though naan thaan sagalakalaa vallavan found its place in mahendran movie it still was played in the background ;) but you did bring it forward for its (musical) merit and did make Sara to feel shy (lajja) and proud at a time.

idhukkappuram ungalai vechu naan enna comedy pannaradhu. Kidding

indha comedy thanE vEndangradhu. comedy paNNuradhukku illannu sollikittE "kidding"-nnu 'kindal'ing...this is so OISG-esque ;)

"பன்"முனைத் தாக்குதல்-இது நியாயமா? You too Saravanan? I Feel like Winner Vadivelu  Srini, Completely aware of my limitations i had kept a very low benchmark for women to qualify for my கனவுக் கன்னி status. If looks could kill I am a Gandhian!

Winner vadivelu-vaa? kusumba paaruyaa...varuththa padaadha "vaalibar" sanga thalaivarnnu prasthaabamaa.

if it were someone else then that person would have equated himself to soona-paanaa and state the give-up dialogue after sprinted chase by entire village and not a raththa bhoomi kind of dialogue.

but thinking again it has to be OISG-esque, isn't it? hence no wonder it was  ;)

vengayam,

There's no disappointment in you having a different taste for things. But I certainly didn't think the world of this song due to my esteem for the creator. In fact, I thought it was T.R. Papa who MD-ed this song until Saravanan corrected me. Anyways, I didn't mean to press you on it. You have the right to diss any song for any reason.

Friends,

Most of you are veterans and must be aware of what I am writing below:

In the initial years of her career, Menaka used to get into some controversy or the other for no fault of hers!! Her first film 'Raamaayi Vayasukku Vanthuttaa' was condemned by many who felt the title was obscene / vulgar (of course by 1979/80 standards!). DMK, on its part, coined the slogan "Raamaayi Vayasukku Vanthuttaa! Thaali ingE, Thangam engE?" in 1980 assembly elections, when they had promised gold for Thaali , in a 50:50 alliance with Congress! It is another matter that MGR had a massive win that time and the need for them to implement the promise never arose!!!

Her second film ' Saavithri' offended the fledgling Brahmin association in TN , who went to court against the main theme of adultery by the heroine who was portrayed as a purohit's wife! CM MGR is said to have commented " 'arangERRam' varumpOthu summaa irunthavargaL ippOthu En ethirkkiRaargal?"

There used to be one Vanitha (I think I spotted her in some mega 'azhugai' recently!) who used to pick up fights with Menaka frequently.

Kumudam wrote:

Q:'En addikkadi ungaLukkum Menakavukkun manaththaangal?'

A: 'naan Iyer, Menaka Iyengar! adhuthaan kaaraNam!'

Kumudam:idhu eppadi irukku?!

If it was today, Kumudam would have written " appadip pOdu arivaaLa!!' or 'aarambichchittaangayyaa! aarambichchittaanga!'

Vanitha Vs Maneka ? உழக்கில கிழக்கு மேற்கா?No offence meant to their height as both would have vertigo on a high-heel shoe.

Maneka gave a good performance in சாவித்ரி.In fact "பசி" துரை had lots of hope on her and cast her in his next (post-shobha) venture ஒளி பிறந்தது .

Udhaya,
I know. i simply gave it a second hearing (Yes saravanan I can hear Dhool now - in my new location) to see if I had thrown out a pearl in the dust. I concluded I hadn't!
OISG ,
I am getting on in years!
I didn't understand your cryptic post. Am I supposed to join in menaka vs Vanitha debate? I know pretty little about Menaka except she looked sort of cute in "Ramanin Mohanam". and did she play Jai's sister in Kizhvaanam sivakkum. as reg. Vanitha YGM would be a better choice

i have always wondered why this song (amma undhan) is wavering after the initial extraordinary pallavi. till date i dont have an answer.

i remember only the first line amma undhan kaivalaiyai maara maatena. even after hearing 5-6 times today morning, i remember only the first line in the evening.
