- 'Ragapravaham' Sundar alias Anniyan writes:

Song: Chinna arumbhu malarum
Film: PangAligaL
Music: S Dakshinamurthy
Lyric: Marudhakasi
Singer: P. Suseela

If it is Neela vanna kanna vaada for R Balasaraswathy, then it is definitely this SOTD for P Suseela. Always songs composed for lullabies will be very special and particularly this song is a class. An out and out P Suseela song and I would rate this song among her top 25 of tfm 50s easily. She paints a mesmerizing lullaby right from the opening humming, the sheen in her voice being very impressive. Just listen the way she sings …sirippai sindhi valarum…aha! Is there any letter between ‘si’ and ‘chi’? PS enjoys and sings every bit of the song with the required bhavam. A lullaby in all its grandeur- soothing and caressing!

Alibaba fame Susarla Dakshinamurthy is the brilliant composer of this song. The violin piece before the pallavi is beautiful. S.Dakshinamurthy employs clarionet throughout which enhances the vintage appeal besides bulbultara. See how a wonderful humming precedes every charanam with SD keeping lullaby in mind ! Further, a touch of Bhimpalas does the magic. A more interesting feature about this song is that every time I listen to this song, I am reminded of many enchanting melodies that came years later …in the second charanam ending urimai ellam tharuvaar…….directly takes me to the interlude preceding yaanai padai kondu saenai pala vendru vaazha pirandhaayada …. (malarndhum malaradha-Pasamalar) and on listening to the opening lines of the first or third charanam , viz., mannil ulavum nilavey en vayittril udhitha kaniye or ezhai kaNda dhanamey manam ilaga cheyyum azhagey many a time invariably and inadvertently landed me in endha kuzhandhaiyum nalla kuzhandhaidhaan mannil pirakkayiley avar nallavar aavadhum theeyavar aavadhum annai valarppiniley …(indha pachaikkilikkoru – Needhikku thalai vanangu) . Must be a creative influence on other MDs.

The lyricist of this song is A. Marudhakasi. We remember Thiraikkavi thilagam Marudhakasi on his death anniversary today ( 29th November).

Kavignar Marudhakasi (1920-89) had his initial guidance and initiation into writing poetry by Papanasam Rajagopala Iyer and was much inspired by the works of Arunachala Kavirayar, author of Rama Natakam and Gopalakrishna Bharathi, author of Nandanar charithiram. In his early days, he had associated himself with several theatre groups alongwith Kavi K M Sheriff and when Tiruchy Loganathan was engaged as a music director for a play where Marudhakasi wrote the lyrics for his tunes TL was so fascinated by the content that he sang the lines before that great composer G.Ramanathan during a recording for a Modern Theatres film. When Modern Theatres Sundaram heard the song he was also so impressed and immediately summoned Marudhakasi and thus Marudhakasi wrote his first film song under GR for Maayaavathi (1949) which opens with Pennennum maayappeyaam poi maadharai en manam naaduvaeno. Subsequently, with the whole-hearted support and encouragement by Udumalai Narayana Kavi , Marudhakasi went on to write lyrics in every film that was released in the 1950s and became the busiest and most sought after lyricist of that decade. He was engaged as aasthaana kavignar of Modern Theatres in the 50s. Rightly at the end of the decade, Kudandhai Vani Vilasa Sabha conferred on him the award Thiraikkavi thilagam. Marudhakasi was an adept in composing lyrics for pre-set tunes and this skill made him most sought after whenever Hindi songs were dubbed by our MDs. This skill understandably Udumalai Narayana Kavi lacked and so he recommended Marudhakasi whenever such situations arose and thus Marudhakasi became a hot favourite of Modern Theatres banner in the 50s.

My admiration for Marudhakasi grew multifold when I understood that he was an uncrowned king of lullabies (Thirai thaalaattu thilagam?). Below I give a list of some of the most popular lullabies of yesteryears penned by Marudhakasi:

Neela vanna kanna vaada – Mangaiyar Thilagam/S Dakshinamurthy/R.Balasaraswathy
Thandhai yaaro thaayum yaaro – Yaar Paiyan/ T Chalapathy Rao- S.Dakshinamurthy/PS
Ejamaan pettra selvamey – Alli pettra pillai/K V Mahadevan/G Ramanathan
China pappa enga chellapappa – Vannakkili/K V Mahadevan/PS
Kuzhandhaiyum deivamum kondaadum – Vannakkili/K V Mahadevan/PS
Nee siricha naan sirippaen - Paavai vilakku/K V Mahadevan/Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi
Muthe pavalame..Aalapirandha en kannmaniye– Uthamaputhiran/G.Ramanathan/
R Balasaraswathy,A P Komala
Yellorum unnai nallavan endrey – Bhagyavathy/S Dakshinamurthy/PS
Chinna chinna roja - Azaghu Nila/ K V Mahadevan/PBS
Thaayaakki vachcha en – Rowdy Rakkamma/ Shankar-Ganesh/VJ

The lines in all the songs are very simple but still evocative in appeal and fortunately had good music composers. As he wrote these songs only for films probably he could not get that coveted title Kuzhandhai kavignar. The lyrics are filled with motherly affection - enjoying the motherhood, relishing the pranks and prattles of the child with words of courage, cheer and encouragement. One more addition can be made to the above list though cannot snugly fit in thaalaattu but a miss-not superhit Konji konji paesi madhi mayakkum (Kaidhi Kannaayiram/KVM/PS).

Marudhakasi was instrumental in introducing TMS to Sivaji in Thookku Thookki which duo later created history which is unparalleled in the annals of tfm.

That A P Nagarajan-Marudhakasi-KVM combination also gave us many immortal songs during this decade is noteworthy- the films Naalvar, Mangalyam, Nalla idathu sammandham, Sampoorna Ramayanam, Makkalai pettra magarasi, Neelavukku neranja manasu and Alli pettra pillai had some of the best compositions. The Thirai isai thilagam and Thiraikkavi thilagam collaboration has worked wonders as can be seen from their songs. The last film in the list , Alli pettra pillai was produced by Marudhakasi himself and the only highlight of the film is that Marudhakasi had persuaded G Ramanathan to sing a song and thus was born Ejamaan pettra selvamey.

As we know, since 60s belonged to that redoubtable poet Kannadasan, Marudhakasi could not make his presence felt much. Chinnappa Devar and K S Gopalakrishnan gave Marudhakasi some opportunities in the 70s and many songs of Devar-Marudhakasi-Shankar Ganesh and KSG-Marudhakasi-Shankar Ganesh combinations became hits. Songs of Vellikkizhamai Viradham and PalAbhishegam, to quote a few, stand testimony to this.

Though Marudhakasi is said to have written over 4500 songs for films in various genres, I am restricting this write-up only to his lullabies as our SOTD is a lilting lullaby.

Despite being highly talented and considered numero uno in the 50s, I still feel Marudhakasi is an underrated lyricist and worse, most of his compositions are even wrongly credited to other more popular lyricists. Sadly, he did not get the recognition he deserved.

PangAligaL(1961) was produced by Irish Films and the film starred Gemini Ganesan, Saroja Devi, Anjali Devi and M R Radha. Story and dialogues were by M S Solaimalai and was directed by
G Ramakrishnan, an assistant to doyen L V Prasad and worked as associate director in Mangaiyar Thilagam. SOTD is filmed on Anjali Devi.

There is a Tiruchy Loganathan version of this song which M R Radha sings in the film.

Music composer S. Dakshinamurthy is still alive and lives in Kotturpuram, Chennai with his son Susarla Hari. When we gave a programme in April 2005 at Dakshinamurthy auditorium, P S High School, Mylapore, Chennai titled Pazhasu pazhasudhan his family so graciously brought the aged music composer on our invitation to the programme and stayed till the end. We cherish the memories.

adadaa eththanai inbam ithu...one of my favorite causes in the world: drumming up glory for overlooked writers! one of my favorite singers in the world: P. Suseela. And of course, Maruthakaasi has been mounted in my private shrine ever since I heard the "Paavai Vilakku" soundtrack. That soundtrack alone is enough to put him among the all time greatest lyricists, but a phenomenal career he had indeed with GR and KVM.

A wholehearted thanks for this astounding SOTD.

Anniyan a superb write up. "Saravananesque in sweep and detai!"
seeing the header I thought it was a rama narayanan film with "pandiyan " and/or Mike mohan/ muralias the pangaaligal.
The song did not ring a bell! Till I heard it the second time. I distinctly remembered the tune but not the voice. Then it clicked My chitti used to sing this song along with others while putting us ( cousins 4 )to sleep.kanna karumai neera kanna, alli thandu kaal eduthu, neelavanna kanna were all included.
Somehow have not heard this song since then and had almost erased it from my memory till you have helped me retrieve it. More than the song itself, this has given me such a joy that is too great to even type about properly.

This dakshinamurthi is different from the "swamy' D'murthi ( of malayalam & udhappu kan chimitugirathu fame) V versus S illaya?

Also Anniyan you have hit the nail on the head may be because of The Modern theatres association I have made the cardinal sin of labeling many early songs of Maruthakasi as Pattukottai's and later songs as "kannadasan's'

Saravanan would know because it was in this very forum (or in TFM) that He chided me quite rightly when I blasphemously attributed pattukottai's name to " manapparai maadukatti "
it was then and only then I realised that Maruthakasi not only preceded Pattukottai in TFM history.
His case is much like VVS Laxman today. when upstarts and pretenders walk away with name!

so for
1. writing lucidly
2. rekindling my childhood memories
3. remembering maruthakasi on his death anniversary
oru periya OOOOO for Anniyan.
4. of course the song in P S's sweet voice

pogira pokkil oru kelvi
Athu enna "raghapravaham" when was the title given?
do you have a band of your own?

What a song!! What a soulful performance by PS! Great choice, Anniyan!

And thank you for the fitting tribute to our Thiraikkavi Thilakam! A reading of his biography fills one with indignation at how he was let down by the very persons whom he trusted and how his achievements were sidelined. His works however, will forever keep reminding us of the genius that he was.

Anniyan, another worthy addition to your list of Maruthakasi's lullabies is 'kaNNE vaada kaniyE vaada' - iru manam kalandhaal thirumaNam- S.Dakshinamoorthi- R.Balasaraswathi. And wasn't 'ellOrum unnai' (Bhagyavathi) also by Balasaraswathi?

Vengayam, glad you finally found a SOTD to your liking, and happy that we all agree on this one :)

Btw, about Sundar, I'm sure you must be remembering him from our TFMpage days? He is a wonderful person with a great passion for the golden oldies. Here is an extract from 'The Hindu' about him:

There are some people who devote their time, energy and money to identify themselves with their pet passion or hobby. When it comes to their hobby their professional interest takes a back seat and they are ready to sacrifice everything to nurture their passion. K. Sundar or Ragapravaham Sundar as he is popularly known is a chartered accountant by profession and has founded a music troupe called Ragapravaham. He discusses his passion for vintage music with M. J. Prabu.

What is so unusual about someone starting a musical troupe, one may ask? Sundar's speciality is vintage Tamil/Hindi film classics. He has given more than 350 programmes and done a number of television shows.
He is one of the founder-members of the Vintage Heritage, an association for promotion and propagation of vintage film music and classics. The cultural organisation, started in 1992, has been organising monthly programmes for members such as screening old classics, arranging concerts of veteran film music composers and singers.

He has produced two cassettes one with Tamil film songs based on carnatic ragas and another with Hindi film songs based on Hindustani ragas. Ragapravaham celebrated its 150th programme recently.
Mr. Sundar is also the secretary of the Thamizh Fine Arts Centre (Thamizh nunnkalai maiyam) promoted for the cause of Tamil music.

Few other links that give an idea of Sundar and the work that he is quietly carrying on to propagate awareness of the richness of vintage tfm:

Ragapravaham! You were here!!

Some months back I lamented the disappearance of Rgpm Sundar and R Kumaran, two of the posters I held in great esteem. Did you read that??
I have good memories of you from tfmpage days.

Lullaby as a genre is almost extinct in TFM. So any rediscovery of a golden oldie is much worth the effort, thanks to Anniyan. Anbil malarndha nal roja is my benchmark for lullabies. This one almost meets it.

Saravanan,

Saravanan,

Thanks, Kanne vaada kaniye vaada song of Irumanam kalandhal thirumanam is also a gem. But as I gave a list of some well-known songs only, I could not add this. Besides these, there are other songs also from Marudhakasi like Arumbudira muthudhira (Marudha naattu veeran), Chellakkiliye senthamaraiye...thaeda kidaikaadha chellaiyya (Ponnu vilaiyum bhoomi)and several other songs like 'miyaah miyaah poonaikutti' for children. The list will be very long.

Wonderful pick anniyan

PS as always at her best and lullabies are her trademark and she does full justice

MAruthakasi was the most under rated lyricist .. Many film personalites doesnt even mention his name in their interviews what so ever he is one of the brilliant lyricist of that ERA.

He wrote all kind of songs be it folkish song, lullabies are romantic duets everything were awesome

Ennai vittu odi poga mudiyuma, Vivasaye etc...

thanks for this song and remembering A.MAruthakasi too

What currently we brand as "Hook" for a song had been there from those days! Evertime "நாம் களிக்கும் நாள்" comes it sounds so reassuring. So well written, composed and sung. I have not heard this song before.A great lullaby. The brighas in "நாள்" do we get to listen such intricate ones these days? :(

Mr.Sundar, was that you who did Carnatic music based film songs program in Raj TV in 1994-95?

Vengayam, the CA articles period those days were spent on Kannadsan, thi.Ja,Sundara Ramasamy,KaNayazhi,Khalill Gibron,Ayn Rand and above all TFM old songs.(Old monk Rum,Charms used to be the preferred brands).சிந்திக்கையில் கோத வெண்தாடியின்றி ,புத்தகம் பையிலே புத்தியோ பாட்டிலே என்றிருந்து, வரவில்லாமல் செலவுகள் செய்யும் காலம் :D The CA articles period might not have created many writers amongst chartered Accountants but certainly it nurtured the growth of ரசனையுள்ள ரசிகர்கள். Now you have street-smart whiz kids who do not know what they have missed like Colley Cibber's "Blind Boy".

I have mentioned this several times here and in tfmpage. like a few others, I too have had my share of disappointments as far as SOTDs are concerned. But, I have discovered so many of my favorites through dhool and from the regular forumers. Songs like these are precisely the reasons why I remind myself to return to check dhool.com periodically whenever I roam out of it. nandri!

OISG,

You have both-high sense of humour and good sense of rasanai. So nice of you to have listened the song this deep and enjoyed it .Very true, a song so nicely written and so well composed. Very few songs of PS could match this song for her voice. As you rightly said, her intonation in voice whenever she sings naam kalikkum naal varum is splendid! Suseela’s pronunciation of every syllable in the song is worth talking about. What a singer!

Engeyo poyiteenga…! Astounding memory boss! Raj TV programme in 94-95!….yes it is yours truly – but you see, with a team which lacked imagination and rasanai around, I could hardly do any justice to the prog and walked out in the middle- a lacklustre presentation which did not produce the desired results.

Sriram,
Mikka nandri. Nandraaga uranga vAzhthukkaL ...iravil.

OISG the point is even in Engg College hostels the same thing used to happen. anything but text books till the 11th hour used to be the motto.
within a short time we earned the reputation of " reliable" guide on telugu cinema!
enna konjam Politics used to be more of a topic as people from diff parts had assembled under one umbrella " outsiders"
Apart from Ayn Rand I quite second your choice. except a stray issue of Kanayazhi I have not read much directly . Of course 18th parallel was serialised in kanayazhi which i read when it came out as a book.
This gives me a chance to vent out my anguish, oru ilakkiyavaathiyin maranam yaaraiyum athigamaaga baathikkavillai
I am talking about La sa ra. except devoting a couple of pages at max( kalki) to half a page in AV nobody seems to really care.
to add insult thalayin adutha padam patri thaan engum ore pecchu
which is a either remake of naya Don or pazhaya billa ?
paarkkadal ezhuthiyavarkku paarangallai pottal pol irukkirathu
sivakumar's article was one consolation but there too our magazine had to take umbrage under an actor!!

(sorry posted it in the wrong thread)

I am a fan of Solar's "Nadanthai vaazhi kaveri" on Sokkudhe manam. It is a very decent programme and infact we also dont miss "then kiNNam" at 9.30 PM. It was our dinner time and the intial fights for "saaaz Bahu" serials and hyped singer contests now my family has settled down for "then KiNNam". I have chcek out Jaya TV connection in my new place,Doha.

Priya does a neat job. Is "Kovai MuraLi" the son of Soolamangalam/sang "Kadhellennum koil" from Kazhugu?

Vengayam,La.Sa.Ra's name wont sell in todays visual frenzy. You need open mind and closed eyes to appreciate La.Sa.Ra. As he himself puts it that the story of "Paarkadal" will be read like a fantasy in 30 years time. Let the new gen watch Thalai,Thalapathy stuff.Wait for our time to sit back on an easy chair with an arm rest with parkadal to read,Filter coffee for the taste buds with an i-pod full of Viswanathan-ramamuthy,GR.

OISG,

Kadhalennum kovil was by Soolamangalam Murali , son of Rajalakshmi. Kovai Murali is a veteran taken up light music as a career. He has sung some obscure songs for films too, remember Cho's kadhakalakshepam parody in Annapoorani - the medley was sung by K Murali only. Composer VK gave him some opportunities, there is a good song in Ival oru Seethai sung by SJ and KM.

One things sprang out of this SOTD: Maruthakasi's greatness is not known to my generation. We know later days' poets but not much about of Maruthakasi. This is a good tribute to him.

Great Pick-up Anniyan. This song also reminds me of “Vennilla mugam parkuthu”(Jothi malar?)-Yesudas,vani.Written by Kalaijganam(Mirudanga Chakravarthi,Raja rishi,Edhu namma alu fame) music-SG.Shades of Karnataka devakandhari in it.(ok va?)

Raga privagam – gundsa gnabagam varuthu- in that raj tv program, you had told about naalaam naalaam thirunaalaam(K.N) based in rageshri. Is that your program? In that same period ,Sun tv also telecasted a good program i.e Parambaryathai nokki.
I won a prize about RS.1,500 for identifying Karaharapriya in poomalarindida(tick tick tick) .

OISG- CA article ship period is the best period in my life. Most of the commerce students in our Tirunelveli area during late 80s, wanted to join CA at that time. Such a craze! We had paid premium amount of RS.5,000 to our auditor to join CA. Even though most of our friends did not pass even Inter (like me), they are well settled abroad (like me.I am here in Malawi for the past 10 yrs) .Surfing dhool.com and enjoying each and every discussions are my favourite time. Great work guys .Keep it up. Sara, vengayam, OISG, Udaya- all are house hold names .Where is Balaji(Viv Richards) now? Still fighting with Murali srinivas in Mayyam?

A small request to sara: Pl look in to the foll hidden treasures:

Kettathellam naan tharuven(Thikku theriyada kaatil)
Nee oru raga maligai(Pen ondru kanden)
