Song of the Day: santhippOmaa from Chithi.

- Udhaya writes:

Song: Santhippoma
Film: Chithi
Singers: L.R.Eswari, P.B.Srinivas
MD: MSV
Lyrics: Kannadasan

Clouds and rain always speak of discreet lovers and clandestine gatherings to me. Maybe that's why this song reached out to me from my collection.

When a friend of mine got a chance to meet with LRE, he asked her to name her favorite singing partner. The answer surprised him, just as it would many of us. He had thought all along that SPB would've been the reply. Apparently, LRE said it was PBS. If you think about it, this is not all that surprising. LRE-PBS duets have some groundbreaking, genre-bending numbers in them. While SPB can match LRE's spirit and dexterity, PBS provides an elegant foil to her dynamic voice, a soothing contrast to her vibrant style, a steadying force for her unbridled energy giving the perfect yin-yang balance to the listener. And if you notice, in LRE-PBS duets, MSV usually goes to town with more western arrangements and pronounced detours from mainstream tunes (raja raja sreeraaman, kannirandum pinna pinna, uRavinil fifty-fifty...to name a few).

The clipped, nervous tick of a beat in the SOTD is still ringing in my ears. That and the way LRE signs off an amply vowelled word like sandhipomaaaaa. Kannadasan too usually sugars up his inner child with these players and lets him run wild. They had me all along and now they're just toying with me. innum enna thaamatham, ivargaLai ellaam sandhippomaa?

What do you say about PBS? He loves singing. He enjoys singing and he is contagious . The mood gets into the listener. And LRE I honestly feel that she has still not got the appreciation she deserves. ( compare her to Asha B and you will know what I mean)

The way LRE rolls over the sylabbles each word cascading into the next. PBS had the magic of being gentle and manly at the same time. The great things in this world are simple. Like this song.

I would not go into the cycle and picturisation. saravanan's favourite actor by the way!!

Indeed its nice to hear soft PBS and bubbly LRE ! And its surprisingly true that they maintain the same flow in the pathos version of this song too !!

BTW, is it PBS - the male voice in uravinil fifty-fifty ? Somewhere I read that its shankar-GANESH.

muLLil rOja from kalaikoil is another nice PBS-LRE duet

Udhaya

Yet to get over from MINNMINIYAI (LRE-TMS). You have unearthed another one for this week end. MAYYAKATHIL ULAGAI SUTRUOMA .
Kavingar in high spirit  . MSV also hurrying with fast paced interludes with accordion/piano/violin.

Can I expect RAJA RAJA SREE RAMAN next week :)

chandru,

MuLLil rojA is an amazing tune indeed. I love PBS' humming in it.

ramesh,

raja raja is too popular to make it here. Perhaps when I'm really stuck without an appropriate song, I'll put it up. We'll see. It certainly can't be next week for you're expecting it, right?

My selections are usually not, "nIngaL kEttavai". They're usually, "nIngaL kEttkaadhavai" or "nIngaL kEttu maRandhavai".

Good one, Udhaya! The pathos version is a haunting reminder of this earlier happier one. However, I believe this song is very much as popular as ‘raja raja sri rajan’ .

PBS- LRE duets are always a pleasure to listen to- they complement each other so well. Apart from the delightful duets already listed here, I have my favourites like malarai paRiththaai thalaiyil vaiththaai filled with innocence of a bygone era, the suave kanni vENdumaa kavithai vENdumaa, the unseen yaarOdum pEsakoodathu, the lilting engEyO paartha mugam where LRE hums along to PBS’ lines, whispery, bashful ones like neeyE sollu neeyE sollu and kaNNukku theriyaatha andha sugam, boisterous ditties like one day one way and tikki dikki tikki dikki pakkam vandhu pakkam vandhu paarkavaa, the inspired naanoru pakkam neeyoru pakkam pOgalaama, the animated azhagE unakku gunamiraNdu

PBS & LRE have been part of some unforgettable foursomes as well like kaathal enbathu ethuvarai, intha nilavinai naan paarthaal, engaL kalyaaNam galatta kalyaaNam..

Chandru, you’re right- it is Ganesh in uRavinil 50—50.

Saravanan,

"neeyE sollu neeyE sollu and kaNNukku theriyaatha andha sugam, boisterous ditties like one day one way and tikki dikki tikki dikki pakkam vandhu pakkam vandhu paarkavaa, the inspired naanoru pakkam neeyoru pakkam pOgalaama, the animated azhagE unakku gunamiraNdu…"

intha pAttellAm nAn kEttadhE illaiyE ! Please, please, why dont you start an LRE thodar (serial). PLEASE. PLEASE.

Udhaya,

Very nicely said about LRE-PBS, how they complement each other. I remember using the same phrase 'PBS provides perfect foil to LRE's vivaciousness' in this very forum (or was it TFM ?).

Vengayam,

Very right about being LRE under-rated. And that comparison to Asha B. Wel Asha is certainly a better trained singer, much more versatile, but where LRE scores is in the area of NATURAL exuberance, vivaciousness, free-spiritedness in a very INNOCENT way. Asha cannot show any innocence whatsoever even if she tries and she is a good actress (with the voice) but not always natural. It is unfair to compare singers, each one's music is as individual as one's personality is, but just pointing out differences.

Lots people might laugh at me for using the word 'innocence' on cabaret songs, but that is about stereo-typing.

LRE is one of the most natural singers that I have heard. I would sort of put Geeta Dutt and LRE in the same category. Both are just so genuine which is why they sound so convincing in both pathos and exuberance.

Another nice song - pattuchiragu koNda, from karuppu paNam, with ALR.

Sugrutha,

I was comparing LRE with Asha just to show that LRE did not get the opportunity to show case her versatality like Asha disd with " Umrao Jaan". Till that time though she had sung several lilting songs particularly for OP Nayyar she was slotted into the singer who sang for the "other woman" be it the second heroine/ vamp/ cabaret dancer.
LRe did not get that O. She sangan occassional" kathodu thaan" with equal panache but she did not get a full album like "UJ".
Having said that hasn't she proven that her enthusiasm is infectious even while singing hosnnas for various ammans be it Karumari, muthumari, or simple plain mari!
My eternal favourite is the Veda lift " Palingunal oru Maaligai" I am willing to bet my last 4 anna that if a person who is standing does not shake a leg on hearing this song he better consult an ENT specalist. chances are that he/she is stone deaf.
Or the humming for " kallelam maanikka "
We have taken LRE for granted :x

Hi!
I joined today, as you would have seen from my first mail.
A PBS favorite of mine is Madura nagaril tamizh sangam from 'Paar Magale Paar". The title song from the same song is also good. And that reminds me of another astounding line from a song from that movie:
Naan kadalennum kavithai sonnen kattilin mele
Andha karunaikku naan parisu thanthen thottilin mele!

How's this:
Nadhiyil vilayadi kodiyil thalai seevi nadantha ilanthendrale...
