Lyrics: Kannadasan
Clouds and rain always speak of discreet lovers and clandestine gatherings to me. Maybe that's why this song reached out to me from my collection.
When a friend of mine got a chance to meet with LRE, he asked her to name her favorite singing partner. The answer surprised him, just as it would many of us. He had thought all along that SPB would've been the reply. Apparently, LRE said it was PBS. If you think about it, this is not all that surprising. LRE-PBS duets have some groundbreaking, genre-bending numbers in them. While SPB can match LRE's spirit and dexterity, PBS provides an elegant foil to her dynamic voice, a soothing contrast to her vibrant style, a steadying force for her unbridled energy giving the perfect yin-yang balance to the listener. And if you notice, in LRE-PBS duets, MSV usually goes to town with more western arrangements and pronounced detours from mainstream tunes (raja raja sreeraaman, kannirandum pinna pinna, uRavinil fifty-fifty...to name a few).
The clipped, nervous tick of a beat in the SOTD is still ringing in my ears. That and the way LRE signs off an amply vowelled word like sandhipomaaaaa. Kannadasan too usually sugars up his inner child with these players and lets him run wild. They had me all along and now they're just toying with me. innum enna thaamatham, ivargaLai ellaam sandhippomaa?
