Song of the Day: neelamaam kadal alaiyil from malainaattu mangai.

http://www.dhool.com/sotd2/849.html

- Udhaya writes:

Song: neelamaam kadal alaiyil
Film: Malainaattu Mangai
Singers: KJY, PS
MD: Dakshinamurthy
Lyricist: Vaali?

Fresh off the themmAngu series, let me start out with a rare love song in a belated Valentine’s Day celebration. This is not a typical love song where the energy bubbles to the surface and brims like youth. This is more a somber meditation on the preciousness of a gracefully aging love. I picture a pair in languid repose in the intimacy of their shadows, drunk on their love where every look, every caress conveys volumes left unsaid by words.

If you can’t be near a quiet meadow, or a sleepy brook, then at least dim your lights and close your eyes and let the song waft in like dreamy fog.

- I knew that Valentine's Day has truly made it in Tamil Nadu this morning when a traditional daily sheet with all the grahaNam and kuLigai listed a Sivan kOyil uRchavam and "ulaga kaadhalar dhinam" complete with a thumbnail of two lovers in embrace! The Hallmark holiday's popularity continues to rise. Wish you all a Happy Valentine's Day.

A song that is beautiful by its very languorous flow. I believe it was popular in the Radio era. It is still so fresh in my memory.

Thank You Udhaya for finding it.

Good one, Udhaya! Among the early hits of Yesudas in Tamil.

The original is the famous 'ezhilam paala poothu poomarangal kuda pidichu' from the Malayalam movie 'kaadu' (1973/ Neela Productions). Directed by P.Subramaniam. Music was by Vedpal Verma.

Listen to it here:

http://www.musicindiaonline.com/music/m ... name.3496/

It was remade in Tamil by P.Subramaniam as 'malainaattu mangai' (1974/ Rani Productions) starring Gemini Ganesh & Vijayasri. T.K.Pugazhendhi was given the task of copying the songs in Tamil. AIR used to credit the music to TKP whenever this song was song was aired. However, the EP record of the movie mentions Vedpal Verma (The cover of the record shows the kaadhal mannan and Vijayasri in a tight embrace- their attire and pose must have probably inspired later day 'forest fanatsies' like jambu and kizhakku africavil sheela :) )

Another worthy song in the movie is 'vandhaaL kaattu poochendu' endhan veettu ponvaNdu' by Yesudas and humming by SJ.

Usha & Sankar- Happy Anniversary!

i have also downloaded the malayalam version from coolgoose.

i didn't know there was a tamil version to it.

i have heard a lot of great malayalam songs on music india online which would have an exact replica in tamil; and sometimes when i look at the music director's name, it would be illayaraja so i would know it was a remake from tamil.

but looks like, in this case the original was in malayalam.

RC could it be "nilavum malarum paaduthu" from then nilavu?

Somehow the SOTD sounds of an older genre. These days I often listen to this song in the 'iravin madayil' programme on KL radio on worldspace.

Thanks for all the comments, folks. So, Vedpal Varma is the MD then? Has this man done other worthy soundtracks? And you know where I'm going with this...

If so, can we hear some of them as SOTD, Saravanan?

Udhaya's pick has me immersed in nostalgia.
Having got used to the paraphernalia [meticulous planning, cajoling the elders especially paati to agree to accompany us [kids] [For this we used to invent Godly stories], amma's tiffin koodai with flask coffee, idlis or dosas with "moLagaapodi" , fair weather conditions . etal ]just to visit the cinema theatre, watching "Malai naattu" casually on the road side bioscope was a novel experience on a hot, sultry summer night during holidays . My paati had no objection as it was a paisa free road show. Gemini and a bewitchingly beautiful Vijayashree
[ her obituary used to appear annually in "The Hindu" those days. Not sure about now] were the lead pair.
This soft duet and another PS solo with words in between like "onnu, rendu, moonu , naalu.... ezhaam naaLu"
[ I can hum this tune even now] are the only remains in my fading memory .

What a sweet song!

Somehow I used to feel the mild "non-Thamizh" feeling whenever I used to hear this song during childhood. And later I heard the Malayalam song - very popular in Kerala even after many years, often played in radio - which confirmed where it came from.

Thanks Udhaya and Sara for both Thamizh and Malayalam songs! Happy anniversary Usha chechi & Sankar uncle!

I am listening to the Malayalam original. What a dreamy song ! It sounds much richer than the Tamil version. Thank You Saravanan for the link. What a relief it offers in a tense day :)

Usha,

Please don't feel that way. This forum is not so retentive that we can't even mention personal milestones in passing. Nor am I such a humorless toad to object such happy digressions. pindhiya vaazththukkaL!

Beautiful pick Udaya ! :D

God ! hearing the song after a very long time ! Earlier, I thought it was IR's song .

Lovely tune ....whether its a copy or whatever it may be.

This song was regular in AIR I think.

Only one doubt. Some of the ludes resembled the ludes of Thanimayile inimai kaana mudiyuma ( Aadi perukku )

Udhaya, Vedpal Verma has not composed music for any other Tamil movie that I know of, dubbed ones including. Don't know if he's the same Vedpal who composed music for Hindi movies like Souten Ki Beti and the famous 'Nirma' jingle.

Usha Sankar, Thanks- I will contact the person you're referring to.

Vinatha, Thank you :o

Jaya TV has endless surprises in store and this wa featured few days back with Gemini Ganesh wearing a frock and vijayshree in a revealing dress. She was beautiful indeed.

the similar one may not be "Nilavum malarum" but "VeNNila vaanil" (TMS-PS)from Mannippu (music by SMS) whaich has the famous "nee EngE"song.

Udhaya,thanks.the song is very good.
