honey honey’ from neechal kuLam.

Sung by Saibaba & P.Suseela

Music by Dharapuram Sundararajan

Even as I was becoming besotted by tfm, there was one music that I already knew and liked, and it was ABBA. As a child, I used to watch wonderingly while my elder cousins played ABBA albums all day long. They learned the lyrics by-heart and sang along, and discussed the songs animatedly. More surprising was that even my father was drawn by the magic- I still have with me the cassette in which he had recorded the ABBA songs that he liked- on the sleeve he had jotted down in his distinct handwriting the list of tracks. I remember reading ‘voulez vous’ and puzzling over its pronunciation. I was too young to follow the lyrics, but was mesmerized by the music. Sometimes even now when I happen to catch ‘I have a dream’ or ‘Fernando’ or ‘Chiquitita’ on the local FM’s late night requests, I go back to those days when Björn, Benny, Agnetha and Anni-Frid had the world under their spell.

And one such timeless number of ABBA is ‘Honey Honey’. The song was written and recorded in both Swedish and English. The lyrics were written jointly by Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus and Stig Anderson.

Honey honey, how you thrill me, ah-hah, honey honey
Honey honey, nearly kill me, ah-hah, honey honey
I'd heard about you before
I wanted to know some more
And now I know what they mean, you're a love machine
Oh, you make me dizzy

… and so it goes. The song, sung by the 4 singers, was recorded in 1973 and released as a singles album, along with ‘King Kong Song’. It also featured in ABBA’s famous ‘Waterloo’ album released in March 1974.

It was this catchy number then, that Dharapuram Sundararajan chose to adapt when he was called upon to compose the music for neechal kuLam. neechal kuLam (1979/Mariamman Creations) was the film in which Suman made his debut. He was studying B.A. (Literature) in Pachayappas College at that time and was also teaching Karate when he bagged this film. Master Shekar, Major Sundararajan, VKR, Surulirajan, Gracy, Indirani, Abhilasha and Manorama were his co-actors in the movie. Dialogues were by Kanakashanmugam. The film was directed by veteran T.R.Ramanna.

Dharapuram Sundararajan was a trained and talented singer, but fame and fortune eluded him all his life. He made a mark in the few songs that came his way, and then faded into oblivion. He composed music for 3 films- Hello Partner (1972), neechal kuLam (1979) and ottu maangani (most probably unreleased).

Among the songs of neechal kuLam, ‘aadi pathinettu aaduthu poonchittu’ by SJ is the only song I can remember listening to on the radio. ‘aathukkuLLE ooththu aaduthamma naathu’ is a breezy folk number by MV & VJ. ‘kattazhagai thottaal enna, kannathilE ittaal enna’ (SPB/PS) is a dreamy, caressing number.

Dharapuram Sundararajan’s adaptation of ‘Honey Honey’ is fetching. The simple interludes are well crafted. The deliberately feigned demureness is so delightful in dulcet PS, while Saibaba (Did you know that he is T.S.Baliah’s son?!) sounds urbanely suave.

I discovered this song in one of my CDs- it was a CD that I had forgotten all about; it has songs from kaaLi kOyil kabali, kannitheevu and neechal kuLam- all obscure movies with songs long forgotten. Did ‘Honey Honey’ find any airtime, at least in the days immediately following the film’s release?

In our place people who listened to ABBA and BoneyM were considered "Bandha thambi" or "alattal anna". :D

Mariamman creations - Neechal kuLam - an ABBA inspired ( ) song - Talk of irony! Saibaba and PS have sung it nicely and i find the Brass interludes stylish and good. Suman could not have opted for a better title for his debut movie! I am sure he would have been singing blues after getting this film offer:D .Nice to know that Suman was a "viLyatu piLLai" from "paLLi" days.(English translation might sound objectionable!)Thorughly enjoyed the song.thanks.

"Kattazahgai" is gazalish and I could sing the pallavi correctly after so many years and the credit should go to SPB.

"Adi 18"was a regular Adi 18 song for Vividh Bharathi which stuck to topical songs! That was SJ at her racy best.

Saravanan would have come out with "Saibaba S/o T.S.Balaiah" information while featuring "andha pakkam" but for my intervention  I got to meet Mr.Randor Guy this time in Chennai and he immediately confirmed this.

Thanks for the long forgotten song.

"Honey Honey Thithippadu..' did have a decent air time on Ceylone radio.

Saravan can u please upload the 'Vennila Velli Thattu song..' (rip off of Kya Hua Tera vadha song..) . Isn't that from 'Kaali Koyil Kabali'?.

Is there any good song in Kanni Theevu? Is that film a Jai's remake of the Dhina Dhanthi Cartoon feature?

Thanks

Never heard of this. Thanks for sharing.

Illayaraja was also bitten by the western tunes and his "Darling Darling" in Priya was inspired by "Sunny" by BoneyM. Though I am a die-hard fan of him, I must say he did a lousy job in that song :).

Raj Chandra, kaNmalargaLin azhaipidhazh from Thaipongal was a better adaptation of "Money Money Money" by Abba.
"Dancing Queen" brings back a lot of memories whenever I listen to it. The Winner takes it all is a good one too. Abba made potent melodies back then, better than current US mainstream pop.

"Still I'm sad" by Boney M is one of the most haunting songs ever.

Saravanaa, you're truly the Santa Claus of obscure gifts. That CD should be an auction item for its rarity. I remember "Adi 18" was a hit on the radio. The SOTD was illfated for using the starting words Honey Honey in exactly the same way as ABBA. It must have been the producer's insistence. After the start, the MD has tried hard to make it his own song. He has stuck to the Viswanathan-Ramamurthy mode of light music with bongos, trumpets, and strings.

For those nostalgic for ABBA, there's a hit broadway show, "Mama Mia" making the rounds in major cities. The show weaves a melodramatic Mother-Daughter story utilizing many ABBA tunes. It's a treat for ABBA fans.

Unbelievable - didn't know such CDs existed.

Wonder what's common between them Kannitheevu came in 1981 - the other two in 1979.

Saravanan, do you have other such obscure titles that lesser mortals (such as I) haven't suspected the existence of?

'kannithIvu' featured Jaishankar and Radhika, if I remember it right. It was on some adventure in an island and it didn't have anything to do with 'sindubath' of Thinathanthi. I thought it ran well (it did in Madurai). A friend of mine for whatever reasons I don’t remember now saw this movie continuously for five matinees in a week cutting afternoon classes ! Probably it is for that reason I remember it !

I don’t know if I have heard this song and I will have to wait till I get home. But I very well remember how Boney-M and ABBA used to blare in quite a few tea shops at Madurai in the early 80s. It was a time when quite a few tea shops prided themselves of the sound systems they had; these bands provided them catchy songs to display their speakers and bring in customers. ‘Boonoo Noonoos’ was my favorite Boney-M song! Their first album ‘Night Flight to Venus’ was a riot among music lovers at that time.

None of my American Friends who are lovers of music and musicians themselves has ever heard of Boney-M ! ABBA is popular yet. I think many of ABBA's songs found their way into Indian Film Music. ‘Mama Mia’ was a famous hit in Hindi. I remember having heard ‘Hasta Manana’ too.

It is a pleasure to ramble on those memories :)

Isn't T.S.Baliah's son an actor too ? (Junior Baliah ?)

Saravanan, it's nice that you brought in some memories about Tarapuram Sundararajan. Aiyanaar neranja vaazhvu kodukkanum (MD:GD), Unakkaagavaa naan (KVM), Thambhi vaada adichadhu yogam (a beautiful qawwali song by VKumar in Ninaivil nindravaL) are some of the songs that come to my mind in his voice. A very nice unassuming person. When I happened to meet him in a bus journey one day some time during mid 80s and when I discussed the above songs and enquired him about his work in Neechal kulam he was really amazed. "Thambhi, neenga enna music directoraa..." he wondered. "mere rasika" I replied. He invited me to his house in Soundararajan street in T Nagar, Chennai and was talking with me for some time. But I was not matured enough to ask him how he got the opportunity to work for a T R Ramanna film who would always go for TKR or MSV. Saravanan, now I am asking you, do you know how D S was booked for this film, an off-beat film for that period. But you know how sorrowful I felt when I heard the news of his death a few years ago. Afterall what is the relationship between an ordinary mortal like me and a lesser known MD like DS. It is only the TFM affinity that even sometimes keeps the values alive.

Bala, kannitheevu (1981/ Sri Aivar Art Films/ Jaishankar,Radhika)) was also directed by T.R.Ramanna. It has music by Ilaiyaraja. Songs are ' ithu oru pudhu vidha (Kandathai sollathae)'-SJ & chorus, 'hey, onna renda' (MV/SPS), 'Kandene kandene kaatil engum' (MV/SPS ) and 'ponnana neram raja' (SJ)

Suresh, yes- I have lots of such obscure stuff. Not sure if they would befit SOTD space though :?

Anniyan, your account of DS was moving.

Ah I remember neechal Kullam.this film was my friend Senthil Kumar's treat for having secured an engineering seat- i was yet to get admitted into one so to liven me up he suggested this movie. The name and poster of Indu ( not indrani Saravanan!) in a two piece being the clincher. As it was TRR movie the least i expected was good fun a la naan, moonrezuthu, thanga surangam. But all i can remember now is that it was blotched attempt at a whodunit. to add insult to injury Indu was a huge disappointment
All in all will fall into the list of ten worst movies i saw in theatre!

Saravanan if you are reading it do mail me. I sent all sorts of nat sara combinations ( Nat West tournament e nadathirukkalam )every one came back... ) Yes like a fool i copied my e-mail contact addresses in afloppy and promptly misplaced it.

Yes, Subbu. 'Vennila velli thattu' was a direct copy of 'kya hua tera vada'.

Raaj, sure, will bring 'kaatzhagai thottaal enna' to SOTD sometime.

Subbu and Saravanan,
Any idea about the MD Rajesh who had composed for Kali kovil kabaali and last stage Modern Theatres films. And interestingly MD Sanjay who did for Praayachiththam and Thaedi vandha Lakshmi was Gemini Ganesan's son? Any idea?

Anniyan! Really? Sanjay was Gemini Ganesh's son?? I thought Gemini had only one son (Savitri's son Satish?)

Btw, 'mayangugiraal indha madurai meenakshi' was a great PS solo by Sanjay. Do you recall 'saami senja bommaigale' and 'yaar sonnatho' from the same film?

Saravanan,
Except MayangugiraaL indha...I don't remember any other song because MayangugiraaL...is such a beautiful song that nobody could guess it is from a newcomer.

Coming to this Sanjay, even when Gemini died, the news was that the family members were waiting for Sanjay to come from U S. Anything you know?

Saravanan, is this song with a Guitar interlude, and starts off just like a SJ song in Rishimoolam, Mazhai Varuvathu?

I am sorry I meant the Ithu Oru Pudhu Vidha (actually, it also a male humming in the second interlude) it is a fast paced song and it is very much like the Rishimoolam song. Saravanan, would you know this song. It was played frequently in Radio SriLanka in early 80s. Thanks

natha, the kannitheevu song goes like this: 'hEy...idhu oru pudhuvidha ragasiya adhisaya lOgam...kaNdathai sollaadhE, naan sonnathai sollaadhE' sung by S.Janaki & chorus, the interludes are filled with tribal beats and chorus voices. I doubt if this is the song you're looking for.
