Song of the Day: sruthilayam from neelak kuyil.

- Udhaya writes:

MD: Soorya. Singer: Sujatha.

Once in a while an evening opens up in your schedule where a planned thing falls apart and affords you the time to actually do what you would otherwise consider a luxury. This happened to me last week where a few hours opened up during a rainy Tuesday. After a lazy dinner I strolled along to one of the Indian music stores nearby just to see what the kids are into these days. My eyes immediately fell on a shelf for Thamizh music where unpopular CDs had been marked down to clear out. Out of curiosity I went digging and bagged myself a boxful of no name CDs made by no names. I haven't gone through the whole bunch yet, but the scavenger hunt has already been worthwhile for the SOTD. The movie "Neela Kuyil" could've come out any time in the past 10 years, those in the know can verify.

This is a decent semi-classical song from an unknown MD, Soorya. The composition and orchestration are straightforward and that's not a bad thing when you have flute, mirudhangam and veenai. Soorya shows some temptation to launch a keyboard assault in the first interlude, but then either fear or good taste rein his instincts in. Thankfully the song soars from thereon.

Vaali, as he's wont to do, teases profundity and settles for the mundane. But the reason that merits this as a SOTD is Sujatha. It's not everyday we get to hear her innately sweet voice in TFM, that too in a classical setting. There's fragility to her voice like soft rain, and everywhere the song trickles inside me is healed and refreshed.

neelakuyil had Pandiarajan,Rajashree(karuthamma fame) & manorama in lead.

To my knowledge music was by Sharath & not soorya.
Lyrics were by Vaali.

There was a famous spb-swarnalatha song (i couldnt recollect now)

SOTD is also a nice song from that movie.

yes as rajesh says, it was indeed a pandiarajan movie. i cudnt recollect the heroine though. if i remember right, i saw the cassette of this movie sometime in 1996.

do pandiarajan movies have such semi-classical numbers as well :00:

Good find, Udhaya! Very well sung by Sujatha.

I recall Neelakkuyil- it was a Deepavali ' 95 release, and got submerged in the Deepavali deluge- Rajini's Muthu, Kamal's Kuruthippinal besides Ragasiya Police, Kolangal, Makkal Aatchi, Chandralekha...

MD Soorya is right. The film was directed by an obscure Ashraf. Pandiyarajan helps the blind Rajasri regain her vision, and she becomes a famous singer. She doesn't know how he looks..some confusion later, they unite in the end.

Starts with a bit of PanthuvaraLi then moves on to familiar Hamsanandhi. Sujatha sounds as good as Chithra in this semi classical.Nice one!

Rajasri,PandiaRajan - 2 simple reasons for the movie to bomb and fall in the must-avoid category.Poor Soorya!.

Agathiyan Thamizhil Thevaram- Udaya ethu kavidhayilkooda jeeraNikka kashtamaga irukiradhu  Vaali GRRrrrrrrrr...

Glad you guys enjoyed the song.

Rajesh,
The CD cover has the MD as Soorya. Isn't Sarath supposed to be a powerhouse MD in Malayalam? I've heard some of his amazing compositions for Chitra. I don't think Soorya is quite in that caliber as evidenced by the other songs from Neela Kuyil.

The other songs:

1. Oru Vaanambaadithaan vandhu gaanam paaduthu--SPB, Swarnalatha. an okay midtempo song that an SAR or Agathiyan could create on a good day.

2. Poo maalaiyidhu--KJY and Sujatha (Sad). With dramatic violins and sad flutes, this probably accompanies a sappy scene in the movie. Songs like these must be KJY's 401K plan. I'm not sure I want to hear Sujatha sing sad songs either.

3. Yaar nenjile--Swarnalatha. Swarnalatha does a decent job in this upbeat number. This must've been the solo for the heroine as she imagines her future suitor. God, didn't SriDevi and SJ patent this scene/song situation some 3 decades ago? Vaali, another retiree overstaying his welcome, has fun rhyming paaththiram/maaththiram, aapaathikEsam/Vesham.

4. Poo maalaiyidhu--KJY and Swarnalatha. (If not for KJY this can be called the happy version, with him, happiness is always at bay).

I still wish Soorya had found a few more movies to find himself musically. But like it has been pointed out already, the movie was stillborn and took with it Soorya's career.

I remember reading somewhere that Soorya was a pseudonym for Manicka Vinayagam.
